On July 23, join DWT employment services attorneys Jeremy Merkelson, Alicia Hines, Esq., Mohamed Barry, Esq., and Jaime Walter from 12:00 PM - 1:30 PM PT for a discussion on the U.S. Department of Labor’s (DOL) final rule on classification of independent contractors that went into effect on March 11, 2024. This webinar will review the new multi-factor test under the DOL’s contractor classification rule, the new salary thresholds under the FLSA exemptions, how to assess the potential impact of these changes to your business, and how to effectively communicate with the workforce about needed changes. The team will also speak on the recent changes to the standards governing who is exempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act’s (FLSA) minimum wage and overtime rules (which have a July 1, 2024, effective date). We look forward to this engaging session on best practices and the potential legal challenges that could complicate matters, as well as answering your questions about these DOL rules. Register here:

In NPR v. CENTCOM, a FOIA case seeking records related to a coverup over the worst friendly fire incident in modern history during the Iraq War, the Ninth Circuit reversed the lower court’s earlier judgment in favor of CENTCOM, finding that it must search its unclassified networks for relevant records. The case was successfully argued by Caesar Kalinowski IV, with oversight by Thomas R. Burke, and key support from commercial litigators, Jean Fundakowski in San Francisco, and former DWT litigator Andrew Row.

This year, DWT will be participating in Diversity Lab's "Moments to Movements Hackathon," where 100+ law firm partners and in-house counsel "hack" some of the toughest challenges facing DEI in the legal field and beyond—the latest effort in the firm's active and widely recognized dedication to developing solutions for workplace diversity, equity, and inclusion. The Hackathon unites leading legal minds and DEI experts for a "shark-tank style" pitch competition to devise "sustainable and scalable" solutions for organizations facing the headwinds of anti-DEI rhetoric and other challenges. Ideas will be pitched to eight judges and 200+ audience members at the NYU School of Law on July 11, with the winning plans potentially developing into Diversity Lab pilot programs at law firms and legal departments across the country. "As part of our Engagement pillar, collaborating with clients and the broader legal community is key to our DEI efforts," said Yusuf Zakir, our Chief Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Officer.
