"Data is power, but it’s not neutral; it’s up to us, the data-literate generation, to harness its potential responsibly." Thanks for Preyansi Mani of Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH for sharing your insights into #data and #AI skills young people need in the #workforce today.

#ActionableImpact means making data and AI accessible to everyone. data.org joined social impact leaders, government officials, and educators from around the globe at the Center for Inclusive Growth's Impact Data Summit in New York during #UNGA79. From pragmatic optimism to idealistic vision, sessions and even sidebar conversations throughout the day emphasized that creating lasting solutions requires all of "us." Key takeaways from the panels were clear and validating for our work at data.org: localism, trust-based partnerships, long-term investment, and robust capacity building are critical to driving meaningful, sustainable impact. Cormekki Whitley, Ph D closed out Mastercard Center for Inclusive Growth Impact Data Summit by moderating a panel on the future of social impact in data and AI with some incredible partners. It was a powerful reminder that collaboration and inclusive innovation are essential to unlocking change. #DataDrivesImpact #InclusiveAI #ClimateWeekNYC

My takeaways from #UNGA79 at a time of thrilling technological innovation. So much emphasis – across government, academia, and industry – is on accelerating progress. Move fast or you run the risk of losing ground in the data and AI revolution. But moving fast can lead to failure unless you take a thoughtful approach to accessibility and inclusion. In the absence of this inclusive growth strategy, the digital divide will continue to grow, threatening to leave a third of the world behind. At the Dasra Philanthropy Forum during #UNGA79, I offered this advice to funders who care about a more inclusive approach to yield more equitable impact: 1. Avoid duplication. You can’t scale with duplication, so prioritize coordination and collaboration wherever possible. 2. There is power in the community. The questions lie with the community. Let them lead the way to answers. 3. Investments in capacity building is an enduring human capital infrastructure, so commit to adding this as an added line in the investments you make. For our part at DataDotOrg, we will continue to practice what we preach across these recommendations, especially in our ambitious approach to global capacity building. Thank you to #Dasra and Director Parnasha Banerjee for convening this important conversation, and to my fellow panelist Manu Chopra of Karya for your valuable insights! #ClimateWeekNYC #DataDrivesImpact #InclusiveAI Bayo (Olubayo) Adekanmbi PhD DSNai - Data Science Nigeria Vukosi Marivate Ankur Vora Danil Mikhailov Perry Hewitt Cormekki Whitley, Ph D Sanjay Purohit Shubhi Vijay

We have barely scratched the surface of the potential power of #AI. Nor do we fully understand its shortcomings and risks. In an #UNGA79 fireside chat with Devex editor Catherine Cheney, our Chief Data and Technology Officer Uyi (O.T.) Stewart considered both the challenges and the opportunities faced by low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) hoping to leverage AI for development. In particular, Uyi underscored that large language models continue to be developed with and informed by high-resource languages – at the risk of putting LMICs at a significant disadvantage. “We must localize data, localize language, and localize capacity,” he said. “We need to come together to digitize local languages and level the playing field for inclusive growth and development.” #ClimateWeekNYC #DataDrivesImpact #InclusiveAI

Another full day at #ClimateWeek -- and nearly every event today brought forward issues related to #women and #gender. 💪 In my #AI2AI challenge update at Dasra, I touched on the centrality of women's economic empowerment in many of the proposals we reviewed. And I shared the top trends in topic and technical approach. 💪 Subsequent remarks from Jackie Jones of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation pointed to the need for recognizing gender issues in topics like immunization, where the tie to gender might not be immediately evident. 💪 Dasra also hosted a panel of women-led organizations focused on women's issues including Hechin Haokip, Farida Kathawalla -- and the uphill battle many face fundraising. 💪 Next, at Goals House, Women in Philanthropy and Impact Africa launched a diaspora-led initiative aiming to unite women leaders and organizations in the philanthropic sector to catalyze social and economic change across Africa. It was wonderful to see DataDotOrg Inclusive Growth and Recovery Challenge awardee GiveDirectly talk about the impact of direct cash transfers. Shoutout to the many women who led, hosted, and participated in these events: Neera Nundy Parnasha Banerjee Apurva Srivastav Katherine Kremer Daphne Kis Micheline Ntiru Cormekki Whitley, Ph D Shubhi Vijay
