This special week is dedicated to recognizing and appreciating the crucial role that each member of the supply chain team plays in ensuring DH runs smoothly and efficiently. Our supply chain team is the backbone of our hospital's operations. Their hard work and dedication ensure that our medical professionals have the tools and resources they need to provide exceptional care for our patients. From managing inventory and coordinating logistics, from contracting to buying, to ensuring the timely delivery of critical supplies. We want to take this opportunity to extend our heartfelt gratitude for everything the supply chain team does. Their commitment to excellence and tireless work behind the scenes does not go unnoticed. • Elaine Churchill didn't start working at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center as Assistant Director of Food and Nutrition Services. She began at the hospital some 40 years ago by delivering trays of frozen food to patients. Food services were different back then. The size of the department was nowhere near the more than 160 people now employed. But even back then, Churchill liked her job, so she stuck with it. After a stint delivering trays, Churchill went on to work the phones, answering patient requests for meals. Then, she was a short-order cook. Then, one of the storeroom personnel. Then, she took orders and made deliveries to the dining room. “Then, I became a kitchen lead out back,” she says, before taking classes to learn to become a supervisor and manager. After all that, she became assistant manager. Two years ago, she received the Employment Leadership Award from the New Hampshire Employment Leadership Committee. She and her colleagues also were featured in the September 2022 edition of Business NH Magazine and honored at a gala event that October. But ask her about the responsibility she carries or the recognition she has received and Churchill is humble. She points out that she is just one of 40 full-time employees who plan and prepare 3,000 fresh, nutritional meals a day for patients in their rooms. Their team also provides fresh and often locally sourced food to the hospital’s dining room, cafes, and fresh-food vending machines. They try to minimize the department’s environmental footprint and create efficiencies while meeting the nutritional and dietary needs of patients and staff. “It’s one of the cleanest kitchens I’ve ever seen,” says Director of Food and Nutrition Services, Fredrick Girard who recently joined the department. Through it all, the team never loses sight of the patient. Executive Chef William Jones, who goes by David, tells new hires to put their heart into each meal because this meal could be the patient’s last. “It’s all about the patient. We care,” says Girard. Churchill agrees and wants to give all patients the best culinary experience their team can provide. “Appetite is always working against them. Let’s do all we can.” Did you know that Healthcare Foodservice Workers Week is recognized during the first full week of October? We're fortunate to have such a dedicated team to care for our patients, visitors, and staff. You can join Elaine and the rest of our amazing food and nutrition team. • “The harvest goes directly into the hands of community members,” explains Taralyn Bielaski, MPH, Community Health Partnership Coordinator for Regional Community Health. All food grown in the garden is distributed by Willing Hands to over 80 partner organizations throughout the greater Upper Valley region. Bieleski and Chelsey R. Canavan, MSPH, Manager of our Center for Advancing Rural Health Equity at Dartmouth Health, also help to get healthy foods to patients through various food and nutrition support programs, including Dartmouth Cancer Center, DHMC’s Moms in Recovery program for pregnant and parenting people, multiple clinical departments at DHMC and the Women’s Health Resource Center, a community service offering preventive care and resources. In total, The Farmacy Garden grows around 1,200 pounds of produce every year. Learn more about this wonderful community partnership: https://lnkd.in/exijFr4V

  • We've partnered with the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology - AAAAI's National Allergy Bureau to install a pollen counting station on the roof of DHMC’s power plant. Led by allergy and clinical immunology specialist Erin Reigh, MD, MS, samples collected in the pollen counting station will be reported back to NAB for inclusion in its national tracking of environmental allergen levels. "A lot of pollen counting stations are also located in big cities, which is obviously a very different environment as well," Dr. Reigh said. "I really wanted more accurate information for our patients." ⤵️ https://lnkd.in/dP9bhTJp

  • We've partnered with Acadia Mountain Guides Climbing School to offer the first Diploma in Mountain Medicine (DiMM) program east of the Rocky Mountains. The program is designed to train physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses and paramedics in mountain rescue and survival. As Nicholas Daniel, DO, director of DHMC’s Wilderness and Austere Medicine fellowship, told the Valley News, there is a strong interest in wilderness medicine in the region, and the new program has already garnered multiple inquiries. “A lot of us in emergency medicine are outdoors people, and it’s a perfect opportunity,” Dr. Daniel said. “It gives providers another way to think about their clinical practice. Outside their normal box.” https://lnkd.in/eqTtcTmk

  • “One of the rewards of choosing surgical technologist as a career is being part of an amazing team that works together in providing care for surgical patients going through what may be one of the most important moments in their lives,” says Andrew Courville, CST, program manager at the Dartmouth Health School of Surgical Technology. Being a Surgical Technologist is a physically demanding, mentally challenging, and incredibly rewarding professional role. It requires the ability to focus, problem-solve, pay close attention to detail, have excellent listening and communication skills, and an underlying commitment to doing what is right for patient safety and well-being. Thanks to all of our current Certified Surgical Technologists!

It is National Surgical Technologists Week, and surgical technologists are being recognized for all they do to make operating rooms efficient and safe. Dartmouth Health’s Workforce Readiness Institute is celebrating the students, apprentices, and alumni of our Surgical Technologist Training Program. Since 2016, the program has graduated 66 new Certified Surgical Technologists, with another 8 students beginning their studies this week!
