We are always excited when team members have the opportunity to share their work as a way to inspire others to develop similar programs in their communities. Good luck to Markanda as she prepares to present our Hep C + Harm Reduction bridge program at this international conference.
In less than a week, I will be in Athens, Greece to present my work at #INHSU2024! This October, join me at @INHepSU in Athens, Greece, and discover the latest evidence on hepatitis C, harm reduction, drug policy, and more. We always appreciate when Eli Lilly and Company employees volunteer at Damien Center for their Global Day of Service. This years volunteers worked on mural pieces for the mosaic that will adorn the elevator shaft of our new building! #volunteer #community #service #globaldayofservice #indianapolis

Today, Indianapolis lost one of our fiercest advocates for those living with HIV/AIDS. Coby Palmer was a co-founder of the Indy Bag Ladies, one of the nation's oldest HIV/AIDS fundraising groups. Coby and the Bag Ladies were one of the first groups in Indiana to raise awareness and funds for the HIV/AIDS crisis. This advocacy and fundraising were vital to the founding of Damien Center. During the earliest days of the HIV/AIDS crisis, Reverend Canon Earl Conner looked to gather community groups to address the community's needs, and Coby and the Bag Ladies stepped up. Together, they created a welcoming home for those ostracized by their families and the community due to the stigma of HIV/AIDS. Coby's impact remains powerful and ever-present at Damien Center. He had a passion for making sure individuals living with HIV/AIDs had access to quality food and were always treated with dignity and respect. This passion led to us naming our food pantry after him. His legacy of kindness and generosity will continue at Damien Center and through our entire community.

Dr. Venis is an integral part of our clinical team here at Damien and we are always excited when our passionate team members can share their experiences with tomorrows leaders.
In celebration of Hispanic & Latino Heritage Month, La Alianza Latino Community Center hosted Dr. Juan Carlos Venis 09' last Wednesday for Tacos with Alumni. Juan shared his professional experience, his journey with identity, and how Wabash shaped his purpose. 🌮🎤

With advancements in treatment, people with HIV are living longer, healthier lives which means they are running into treatment-related challenges and additional stigma. Additionally, more than half of the people living with HIV in the United States are over the age of 50. Today, we celebrate and uplift the personal journeys of those living with HIV over 50 and bring attention to the unique health care issues they face. #HIVandAging #EndHIV #Community #NHAAD

Back in 1990, the US government declared that being of Haitian origin was a risk factor for HIV. The FDA moved to disallow members of that community from giving blood - which was unscientific and stigmatizing. We stood with our Haitian community members in 1990 and continue to stand with them today. They deserve respect and dignity, not stigma and discrimination. #stopthehate #endhiv #throwback #protest

The last time Haitians stood together against discrimination in the US was on April 20th 1990 when 150,000 people shook the Brooklyn bridge in New York to say NO, our blood does not contain HIV and we are proud to be Haitians! Today, we are under attack again but, this time, we have the power of the internet and social media. We have millions of followers in our networks together and have powerful allies everywhere! Its election time in the US! Therefore the value of social media awareness is at its highest! This is exactly when we should come together and be the loudest and rally against discrimination. Lets shake the internet and show those making false claims about Haitians that we will not accept it! Repost, share and call on everyone who has a platform (Haitian or Not) to add their voices to call ! HAITIANS IN THE US ARE NOT PET EATERS ! THEY ARE IMMIGRANTS LIKE ANY OTHERS WHO CAME HERE WORKING HARD TO FULFILL THE SIMPLE PROMISE THAT AMERICA IS A LAND OF OPPORTUNITY! Discrimination against Haitians needs to stop! ❤️🇭🇹 🇺🇸

We have some amazing local artists creating pieces for our new building. One of them is Koda Witsken, who is renowned for her murals that decorate various locations around the city. She was profiled in North Indy this week, discussing her process and the mural she is working on for the building. Give it a read ---> https://lnkd.in/g4gAcZ8p #artwork #local #indianapolis #hiv #mural
