Legislative Internship Program for the Connecticut General Assembly

About us

Since 1969, the Legislative Internship Program has sought to offer CT college students the opportunity to gain first-hand knowledge about how state government works, through direct experience in the legislative offices of the Connecticut General Assembly With the mission to provide educational opportunities outside of the traditional classroom setting, our program is tailored to acquaint students with both the formal and informal aspects of the legislative process. Accordingly, the program provides training, academic examination, and encourages a high level of personal interaction between legislators and the interns assigned to work with them. While serving within the CT General Assembly, our interns gain exclusive insight and access to the legislative players and policy making process. Paired with our academic and supplemental programming, our program offers a unique opportunity for students to explore careers in public service while earning credit, practical experience, and professional connections that will last a lifetime.

Director Of The CGA Legislative Internship Program

2024 CGA Alum Florence O University of Connecticut My time as an intern at the Connecticut General Assembly has been transformative. Before this internship, I had little understanding of legislation, how sessions worked, or even the basics of the legislative processes. Initially, I struggled to see how my skills and passion for social media could be applied in this environment. However, being placed in the House Democratic Office was a turning point. I worked closely with legislators to plan and promote events that aligned with the positive messages they aimed to convey to their constituents. By utilizing platforms like TikTok and Instagram, I was able to merge my passion for social media with the goals of the internship, promoting it in a positive and engaging way. Alongside these experiences, I gained invaluable connections that will support my growth in public advocacy and strengthen my passion for law. The internship also offered educational opportunities, such as tracking bills I was interested in, networking with Connecticut agencies, and having my bill poster project featured at the Old State House. This journey has also allowed me to build lasting friendships with fellow students across the state who share my passions, making the experience even more rewarding.

    Youth Worker at Roca, Inc.

Very excited to announce that I’m starting the position of Youth Worker with Roca, Inc. ! I'll maintain a caseload of & foster one-on-one relationships with 25 very high risk young adult men at the center of urban violence; facilitate, exercise, and practice Cognitive Behavioral Therapy & interventionist programs, and engage with community members, police, probation officers, and courts to reduce recidivism rates. I'm very happy to make this next step in my career of prison reform!! Roca is an amazing organization.

Last weekend, I had the chance to appear on FOX 61 News alongside Mitchell Marks for South Windsor and Emma Wulfhorst to discuss engaging young people in politics and local government. First thing is first, a huge shoutout to Skyler Haines and FOX61 for the invite to talk on a subject so close to me. I wanted to wait a while before posting about this to reflect on my thoughts after recording this segment. When we ran for office two years ago, I felt alone. All of this was uncharted territory for me. None of my friends could relate to what I was going through and the work I wanted to take on. I put my life on hold for something I was passionate about, and I'm still thankful for the opportunity to do what I do every day. I say all this because, as history shows, youth engagement in running for office, or even just voting, has always been low. I'm super proud to do this interview alongside Mitchell because it embodies to me that I'm not the only one. In fact, South Windsor isn't the only town where the engagement for young people is there and is growing! The goal of the interview (and this post) is to remind you to register for your absentee ballot (if you need it) and make a plan to vote in November. I know it's two months out and only a local election year, but promise me that you'll vote this year... pinky promise? Good, I hope to see you at the polls this year! Oh, and before I forget, I'll provide the link below for those who missed the interview! 👇 https://lnkd.in/e-bprEUU
