Art Highlight: Shizu Saldamando’s “Martin’s Cincuentañera” (2018) 🌊 Born to parents of Japanese American and Mexican American heritage, artist @shizutattoo focuses on depicting important figures of Los Angeles’ Latinx, activist, queer, and punk communities. In this work, Saldamando portrays queer punk singer Martin Crudo surrounded in lush blue waves, recalling Yemaya, Afrodiasporic goddess of the sea, and Hokusai’s “The Great Wave off Kanagawa.” The title of the work is a layered reference to the Latin American, Mexican, and Caribbean tradition of quinceañeras. In this work, Saldamando highlights Crudo’s milestone of a “cincuentañera” to celebrate the 50-year-old icon’s passage into elderhood. This milestone is historically rare for those in the LGBTQIA+ community due to systemic issues and the impact of the HIV/AIDS pandemic. This work is not currently on view but keep an eye out for changes in our galleries: https://bit.ly/4dyB5w5 💡 Shizu Saldamando, Martin's Cincuentañera, 2018, oil and mixed media on panel, 48 in. × 72 in. × 1 5/8 in. “The Enchanted Party After François Boucher, The Enchanted Home” by @yvettemayorga is based on a 1992 photograph of a joint birthday party with the artist’s older sister in Zacatecas, Mexico. Swipe → to see the digital collage Mayorga created using the photo before beginning the painting. Now on view in “Think Pink,” an experimental space in the Contemporary Galleries, the piece draws on references to French artist François Boucher, interrupting art history and exploring the meaning of belonging. 💡 ICYMI: Crystal Bridges acquired this artwork in 2023 #YvetteMayorga #CrystalBridges

Great news this morning for our community 👏
Today, the Alice L. Walton Foundation, Mercy, and Heartland Whole Health Institute announced a 30-year, $700 million affiliation agreement in a joint effort to expand access to health care, reduce costs, and improve health outcomes in the Heartland. Cleveland Clinic will collaborate, providing world-class cardiovascular expertise to the effort. The first phase of this project will include building a new cardiac care center of excellence on Mercy’s campus in Rogers, Arkansas, and resources for additional physician recruitment. “We believe that everyone deserves quality whole health care closer to home,” says philanthropist Alice Walton, founder of Heartland Whole Health Institute and the Alice L. Walton School of Medicine. “This powerful collaboration with Mercy and Cleveland Clinic will change the health care landscape in the Heartland, bringing together organizations that are dedicated to increasing quality, reducing costs, and making accessible, value-based care a reality.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/g9FJVpF3

Joan Mitchell was a prolific Abstract Expressionist artist, showing creative prowess in a time when female artists were often overlooked. 🎨 Her adept artistic skill was attributed to more than just her training and accomplishments. Mitchell (1925–1992) had synesthesia, allowing her to register sounds and emotions as different colors. As she overcame the difficulties she experienced as a neurodivergent artist, she embraced her characteristics as her own “secret magic.” Her iconic artistic identity paved the way for the welcoming of neurodiversity into the art world.
