We envision a society that invests in people over punishment.

About us

Former President Barack Obama tweeted about one of CROP's programs on New Year’s Day 2021: "And here’s a story that reminds us of the power of fresh starts, community, and the good that’s in all of us, across the country and around the world.” @BarackObama CROP Organization equips justice-involved people with the resources they need to thrive upon reentry by offering personal leadership development, pathways to family sustaining careers in tech, housing solutions, and community connections. This comprehensive support empowers people to strive for the best in themselves while inspiring hope for families and bringing healing within communities. The CROP Organization is comprised of proximate leaders who have more than 100 years of collective experience with the criminal justice system. Informed by lived experience in prison, formal education, and intense dedication to make a positive impact, CROP drives holistic social transformation by democratizing opportunity, reducing recidivism, and increasing public safety.

For organizations seeking talent in this field, CROP is a valuable resource, helping to reimagine reentry through robust job training and personal leadership development. Their holistic, human-centered approach and vision to invest in people over punishment is transforming lives and setting a blueprint for successful, sustained reintegration into society. 💥 Want Your AI to Write Just Like YOU? Here’s How to Train It in Your Unique Voice! 🔥 Imagine AI writing your emails, reports, or social media posts in your exact tone—capturing your unique style and word choices as if you typed it yourself. Not just an imitation, but a perfect reflection of your personal voice. With the right AI prompt, this is now possible. Whether you’re a leader in a nonprofit, managing multiple priorities, or an entrepreneur juggling countless tasks, this can help you work smarter, not harder. Here’s how you can train your AI to master your writing style: 🔑 How It Works: Upload any document you’ve written—emails, blogs, reports, you name it. The AI analyzes your tone, sentence structure, and favorite phrases, and extracts your style to create a personalized guide. From then on, every piece it generates will sound just like you. ✨ Why This Is a Game Changer: • For busy nonprofit leaders and entrepreneurs, this is a huge time-saver. Imagine offloading your content creation while maintaining your authentic voice. • Efficiency: Focus on the big-picture initiatives while AI handles the time-consuming writing tasks. • Consistency: Keep your message and tone consistent across all platforms, whether communicating with donors, board members, or stakeholders. • Effectiveness: Free up mental bandwidth for more strategic work, increasing productivity without sacrificing the personal touch in your communications. 🛠 Pro Tip: Perfect for anyone managing multiple tasks and still wanting their authentic voice to shine through. A Full Circle Moment: Returning to Folsom State Prison to Inspire Unprecedented Futures! Yesterday, I had the privilege of walking back into Folsom State Prison—a place that once confined me for over half my life. But this time, I didn’t enter as an incarcerated person. I entered as a free man, alongside my brother and colleague, Jason Bryant, to offer hope, leadership, and transformation to those still behind the walls. Together, Jason and I served 42 years on 25 and 26 to-life sentences. He’s been free for 4 1/2 years, and for me, it’s been 5 1/2 years. As we stood in the yard yesterday, I reflected on the incredible journey that has brought us here—two men once lost, now returning to invest in those who still have the chance to transform their lives. On Sunday 9/15, we trained and mentored 35 incarcerated leaders, facilitators of the Quest program, who are not just changing their own futures but are actively transforming the lives of others around them. These men who wear the same blue Jason and I once did—are living proof that transformation is possible, no matter your past or environment. Years ago, Jason, Ted Gray, and I started the Quest program in Soledad Prison, and today that program thrives in Soledad, Solano, and Folsom, with 7 successful programs at Folsom alone. It’s an honor to invest in the Quest Coaches at Solano every Thursday night, helping them step into leadership roles and create ripple effects of change that are felt throughout the prison. For Jason and me, returning to these prisons isn’t just a job—it’s deeply personal. It’s a calling. It’s a reminder that change is not only possible—it’s happening, and we are living proof of that transformation. Together, we stand shoulder-to-shoulder, just like we did all those years inside, but now we stand for something much greater: the power of unprecedented possibilities and the importance of second chances. This work is about hope—showing the men and women inside that their future is real, their transformation is within reach, and they have the power to rewrite their stories. We are committed to building pathways that help people walk out of these gates ready to lead and earn livable-wage careers. Thank you to everyone who supports CROP Organization, believes in the power of transform, the possibility for the unprecedented, and the importance of second chances. Together, we are rewriting the narrative.

🚨 Powerful Story Alert 🚨 Transgender parolees are finding support and opportunities for growth through CROP Organization's transformative programs in Oakland and Los Angeles! In a recent interview with KTVU's Heather Holmes, our President, Terah Lawyer, and Cohort 2 Fellow, Giovanni Gonzales, shared the critical work we're doing at CROP to help marginalized individuals rebuild their lives. Here's a staggering fact: 1 in 20 Americans will experience incarceration over their lifetime, and 1 in 6 transgender people will face incarceration at some point in their lives. When transgender people reenter society, the challenges are even steeper. They often have nowhere to turn after release, and the barriers to stable housing and career opportunities are immense. In fact, a person released from prison is 10x more likely to experience homelessness—and this risk is even higher for transgender individuals. Giovanni Gonzalez knows this struggle firsthand. Reentry homes rejected him—female facilities because he identifies as a man and male facilities because of the gender he was born into. But at CROP, we don't turn people away because of their gender identity; we embrace them based on their drive, potential, and desire to thrive in a career. Today, Giovanni is thriving in his UX/UI training, all because CROP accepted him for who he is and invested in his future. We are proud to stand by him and provide an inclusive space for everyone—regardless of gender. We're honored that the state of California has entrusted us to help people of all genders find a path to career success in tech and beyond. Giovanni often reflects on where he might be if not for CROP and stands in gratitude for the opportunity we were able to provide.
