We have some VERY important news to share when it comes to restoring and conserving native fish in the state of Colorado. In September, our aquatic biologists reached a major landmark in a multi-year plan to restore a naturally reproducing, genetically pure strain of cutthroat trout in the headwaters of the Williams Fork River. But here is the twist, our biologists weren’t stocking cutthroat. They were stocking a special genetic variation of brook trout called “YY males” in these creeks. Sometimes referred to as Trojan males, these fish are a critical part of the plan when it comes to restoring the cutthroat populations. Ready to get a little more in depth with this? These YY male trout are stocked into wild brook trout populations and then reproduce, but because of their genetics they only produce male offspring. Without a viable reproducing population (male and female fish), the brook trout will eventually die out, allowing for native cutthroat trout to be restored. Our staff wrote, researched, designed, edited and published a BOOK and we’re beyond proud of their work! Hot off the presses and ready for sale, our team at Colorado Parks and Wildlife along with famed nature writer, Mary Taylor Young, produced a hardbound coffee table book titled “At Home in Nature, The History of Colorado's State Parks”. The book delves into the rich history of the Colorado state parks system, from inception to the present day, and is a must-read for anyone interested in the state's natural and cultural heritage. It features stunning state park photographs over the years and pictures of current and former staff, outdoor leaders, volunteers, and visitors. Purchase the book at any state park visitor center or online: https://cpw.info/4eay3zt
