As #NHCW wraps up tomorrow, we wanted to share new research from the Commonwealth Foundation. These findings underscore the critical role of community health centers and shed light on their current challenges. - Nearly all community health centers offer timely appointments (88%) and expanded hours for patients to receive care (93%). Rural community health centers are more likely to offer timely appointments (93%) than urban community health centers (86%). - Most offer telehealth services in 2024 (96%), almost four times as many as in 2018 (24%). - Significantly more community health centers have made substance use disorder treatment (66%) and medication-assisted treatment (62%) available to patients in 2024 compared to 2018. - Community health centers face growing workforce challenges, with over 70 percent reporting primary care physician, nurse, or mental health professional shortages in 2024. - Most community health centers find it difficult to obtain specialty care appointments for their patients (73%), particularly those covered by Medicaid or lacking insurance. As Food is Medicine continues to gain momentum, there are opportunities for innovative and multifaceted delivery systems for food and nutrition-related services. A recent Milken Institute report explores the role that pharmacists can play in managing chronic disease and improving access to healthy food.

Last week, the Administration for Community Living released “Aging in the United States: A Strategic Framework for a National Plan on Aging.” The report aims to create a national set of recommendations for advancing healthy aging through advancing service delivery, strengthening partnerships across sectors, identifying solutions to remove barriers, and promoting independence among older adults.
