About us

The Connecticut Invention Convention (CIC) is an award winning, internationally recognized, 501(c)(3) nonprofit educational program designed to develop and enhance critical thinking skills in children in grades K-12 through invention, innovation and entrepreneurship, while encouraging their interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The CIC is the nation’s oldest continuously operating children’s invention education program. Since the 1983-1984 school year, an estimated 300,000 Connecticut students have experienced local CIC invention programs. Annually, more than 17,000 students in grades K-12, from over 275 Connecticut schools, take part in the CIC learning curriculum. Annually, more than 17,000 students in grades K-12, from over 275 Connecticut schools, take part in the CIC learning curriculum and up to 2,400 of them advance to compete in Regional, State, National, and Global Invention Conventions annually. The CIC is funded by sponsorships, grants, and in-kind support from corporations, foundations, and individuals, and academic institutions. Since 2008, the CIC has been on an aggressive expansion plan, growing school participation by more than 200%, expanding its partnership with the University of Connecticut School of Engineering, and adding many new corporate supporters. • Today, Connecticut Invention Convention student inventors showcased their accessibility-focused inventions to members of Pratt & Whitney's accessibility team! During the 2023-2024 program year, these students invented assistive technology to help individuals living with a variety of disabilities. While showcasing their inventions, the students were able to network with current Pratt & Whitney/RTX employees making today's workplaces more accessible. These conversations demonstrated to our student inventors that they have the power to be part of an accessibility-forward workforce in the future! Thank you to Pratt & Whitney for providing this opportunity to CT's next generation of innovators! 💪🏾💪🏽💪🏻💪🏿 @dependableengines @rtxcorporation #CTInvents

  • Throughout the past year, the team at the Connecticut and Massachusetts Invention Convention has been striving to connect more with international youth innovation programs to share our methods and learn from other like-minded organizations! A recent opportunity from East Hartford's Blended Learning and Study Center allowed our team to expand our reach to Nigeria! On August 7th & 8th, CIC's Doron Feller and Bri Livingood served as guest speakers during the Blended Learning and Study Center's Summer Program, a collaboration with the Artificial Intelligence & Robotics Lab at the University of Lagos! During our presentations, the CIC team provided two virtual presentations and interactive opportunities for elementary, middle, and high school students to introduce them to invention and innovation! Thank you to Dr. Oluwakayode Adebowale of the BLSC for providing us with this wonderful opportunity!

  • The student inventors participating in the CIC BLAST OFF! Summer Learning Program are half-way through their first time inventing and innovating with the CIC! During the session, we used Dr. Arlyne Simon's book, "Abby Invents Unbreakable Crayons," as a way to introduce our future innovators to the world of inventing through literature! At the end of the 3-week BLAST OFF! program, the inventors' work will be highlighted at our CIC Summer Showcase on August 24th at the CT Science Center!

  • Throughout the month of July, we worked with UConn College of Engineering's Vergnano Institute for Inclusion to SPARK a passion for STEM in young girls! The SPARK Summer Program is a series of three one-week sessions for girls in 6th-9th grade. During each session, CIC led a She Innovates Workshop, during which the #GirlsInSTEM of SPARK developed concepts for products that solved problems related to weekly themes, culminating in a "Shark Tank"-style pitch to a panel of judges. Our team was overjoyed to be part of this opportunity introducing these young ladies to invention and innovation! Check out some photos from our month at SPARK and learn more about the SPARK Summer Program and the Vergnano Institute for Inclusion: https://bit.ly/3M5kvc9
