Yesterday, Massachusetts voters rejected ballot Question 5, which would have gradually phased out the service rate for tipped employees. This means that Massachusetts employers of tipped employees do not need to re-calculate how those employees are being paid. But since the issue is likely at the top of mind, this is a great opportunity for employers to double-check how they were handling those calculations to begin with. There are some key pitfalls employers need to be worried about when ensuring they are properly compensating tipped employees, and we’ve written an overview describing some of these pitfalls. Managing Partner Erin Higgins co-chaired and presented at The Managing Partners Forum 2024 Fall Symposium, “Empowering Women in Law Firm Leadership,” in Chicago on October 8-9. The conference, designed exclusively for women in the legal profession, was attended by approximately 50 women managing partners from cities all over the United States and Canada. Topics ranged from strategic planning and talent retention to compensation models and business development.

On October 10th, Conn Kavanaugh Managing Partner Erin Higgins (Professional Liability) and Partner Kathleen R. O'Toole (Employment Law) attended the 2024 Shining Star Celebration. The Gala is hosted annually by the Victim Rights Law Center at Artists for Humanity and helps to fund free legal services for sexual assault victims with civil legal issues.
