CPR’s partners recently attended the APRA trade show in Seattle, which we thank for an informative conference focused on emerging trends. CPR’s 30th year in business marks key milestones: Our 3,000th client served, ROI of 1000% and partnering with leaders like the The New York Landmarks Conservancy, Make-A-Wish America and Yale Law School. We have helped our clients raise in excess of $300 billion + overall. The world is at an inflection point with very high stakes. Multiple wars are raging; the vicious impacts of climate change are accelerating and the global population is reaching 8 billion. Concurrently, AI has quickly emerged as perhaps the most innovative technology ever. So, how does this impact people who spend their days researching philanthropy? Certainly, those working in information services can feel overwhelmed, overlooked and unheard. Trade shows are a valuable opportunity for colleagues to touch base and plan for the future. Here’s some of what we observed from the roughly 1,000 attendees at APRA: A typical prospect researcher self-reports spending 5-8 hours researching a major gift prospect. In contrast, our firm requires less than half of that. We’re 100% more cost effective. AI continues to be an emerging topic for prospect researchers. Surveyed globally, 60% of the field feels AI should be implemented into prospect research. Yet less than 5% of researchers believe it will fundamentally change the way their jobs will be conducted. The most common objection cited is an opinion that data aggregators and web sites generally will be defensive and aggressive with their paywalls. They will not permit AI to harvest their data. This impacts product lines such as biographies and press clipping services. CPR sees it differently. Blocking AI will be the market’s first reaction, sure. But there’s simply too many operational inefficiencies in fundraising for the philanthropy market to “sit out” the AI revolution much longer. Significant change is coming fast. Those that prepare for this transformation will benefit. Fundraiser accountability: Some in prospect research are also responsible for database management and too often fundraisers do not consistently input the notes from their meetings into their organization’s CRM. When this occurs, it can put the prospect researcher in an untenable position. First, lack of data or compromised information makes it harder for the researcher to do their job. Secondarily, often times the researcher reports to the fundraiser. Because of the imbalance of power, many researchers cannot hold fundraisers accountable. Professionals get understandably frustrated and feel they have nowhere to go with their concerns. At our firm, we are very grateful when team members, including less experienced ones, challenge leaders to meet the highest standards. We encourage researchers to advocate for themselves and their organization’s benefit. With an eye towards the future, how may we help you?

Recently, Comprehensive Prospect Research was pleased to help our friends and clients George Spencer and Michael Hurlbert at the Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF), raise $400,000 for the 300,000 students of the 50 public HBCUs nationwide TMCF honors the legacy of the late U.S. Supreme Court Justice who famously proved in Brown v. Board of Education (1954) that separate cannot be equal. At the CEO Impact Awards in Washington DC. the student speaker for the TMCF event was scholar Kaiden Ivey, who shared her experience. Ms. Ivey is turning tragedy into triumph with the help of TMCF. As Impact Award winner Toni Townes-Whitley, CEO of SAIC, reminds us: Live your legacy while creating it. Our firm is grateful to have participated. The TMCF lead at our firm is top manager Paul Suberu. Generally, we save our clients up to 50% annually and deliver ROI of over 1000%. How may we help you? #prospectresearch.

Aging parents who have children with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities worry: Who takes care of my child, when I no longer can? One of our 30 year old firm's most inspirational clients is Sheltering Tree, Inc. of Omaha, Nebraska. Shirley McNally and her late husband, Tom, created Sheltering Tree so that their son, Mike, would have a safe place to live after their lifetime. Then they replicated their success by offering homes to 44 souls at two faciliities, with a third location in development. I visited with Shirley and Mike recently and they took me out for the world's best hamburger! Our firm proudly helped raise seed funding for Sheltering Tree a decade ago and we salute Denise Gehringer and her amazing team. Mike McNally is also a filmmaker and we love his film about sunflowers. Even if you have a real challenge such as an IDD, if you want to get something done just do it. Where there’s a will, there’s a way. Mike and his family created an economic model for the families of the approximate 7.3 million people with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities (IDD) in the United States. Thank you Kirsten Koba for making me lifelong friends with the McNallys. How may Comprehensive Prospect Research help you? #prospectresearch.

Over the past year, several leaders of Ivy League institutions have resigned under duress. Our firm proudly partners with many of these elite institutions. Perhaps now the healing can begin and cooler heads may thus prevail. The world looks to America 🇺🇸 as a beacon of hope and wisdom. As our leaders in higher education carefully consider their next steps, is it not critically important that they honor their responsibilities as good citizens and fiduciaries of our nation’s trust? How do you feel about this? Would any experts like to weigh in? Jordan Acker, Craig J. Leach , Jeff Klein, MSSA ? Please comment below.
