CCA is a national advocate for dramatically increasing college completion and closing institutional performance gaps.
About us
Established in 2009, Complete College America is a national nonprofit with a single mission: to work with states to significantly increase the number of Americans with quality career certificates or college degrees and to close attainment gaps for traditionally underrepresented populations. The need for this work is compelling. Between 1970 and 2009, undergraduate enrollment in the United States more than doubled, while the completion rate has been virtually unchanged. We've made progress in giving students from all backgrounds access to college - but we haven't finished the all-important job of helping them achieve a degree. Counting the success of all students is an essential first step. And then we must move with urgency to reinvent American higher education to meet the needs of the new majority of students on our campuses, delicately balancing the jobs they need with the educations they desire. Complete College America believes there is great reason for optimism and a clear path forward. With a little more support - and a lot of common sense - we can ensure that many more get the high-quality college education that will help them live productive and fulfilling lives. All Americans will share in the benefits of their success.

Insights (and swiss cheese content) from CCA Strategy Director Cassie Walizer on the interpersonal skills needed for successful change management.
To increase completion outcomes, emotional intelligence is an essential skill for higher education change leaders. They must simultaneously: 1. Affirm individuals' previous work 2. Acknowledge that previous ways of working have led to poor outcomes for students, especially those who have historically been excluded in higher education 3. Create a sense of urgency for change 4. Share a vision for the future state Back by popular demand, the Swiss cheese photo. 🧀 #changemanagement #studentsuccess #highereducation #emotionalintelligence #prosci Complete College America

I thought this was a nice write-up from Jane Swift, former Governor of Massachusetts, on the link between work - and who works - and student attrition, and what we can do about it. Additional connections to make beyond the article is you can, at the Clearinghouse website in their completing college reports, review NSC 6-year grad rate data to see that students who enroll exclusively full-time, whether at two- or four-year colleges, graduate at triple-to-five-times the rate of those who attend exclusively part-time --- gaps that are larger, and in fact predictive, of others, especially by race and the age bin of 20-24. As the piece here from Higher Ed Dive notes, attrition is particularly correlated with working 20 and, especialy, 28 hours per week (note, more than a third of cc students work 40+ hrs.) The bottom-line is that time is the enemy of college completion - which can be attacked in student success reforms like coreq remediation, dual enrollment, academic planning, and more, and in affordability and basic needs policy work. https://lnkd.in/gZTk2HZF (Note - Jane Swift was a great speaker at our Complete College America Annual Convening last year in Vegas. At Wichita State University, adult learners are part of the thought process for leaders and professionals across campus, including faculty members, librarians, advisors, financial aid specialists, and anyone interacting with adult learners. It's part of what makes Wichita State's adult learner approach successful. Thanks John Fink for your outstanding data analysis so everyone can understand what is happening with #DualEnrollment nationally and in their own states.
Senior Research Associate & Program Lead | Community College Research Center | Teachers College, Columbia University
Last week IPEDS released (for the first time ever!) dual enrollment counts for every college and university, split out by race/ethnicity and gender. Here are 10 takeaways from a first-look analysis, detailed further with data dashboards in the CCRC blog post (https://lnkd.in/gCSn9uRi): 1. Nearly 2.5 million (!) high school students took a dual enrollment college course in 2022-23 2. The top five states for dual enrollment by size—California, Texas, New York, Indiana, and Florida—together reported nearly 900,000 dual enrollments, about a third of dual enrollment nationally. 3. Community colleges served the vast majority of dual enrollment students -- 1.78 million 4. About 1 in 5 community college students is in high school (21 percent of credit enrollment in 2022-23). 5. In 10 states, more than a third of community college students are in high school. In two states (ID, IN), dual enrollment accounts for more than half of community college enrollments (see the map below) 6. 240k high school students took dual enrollment at the 10 largest dual enrollment colleges alone, and of these top 10, eight were community colleges. 7. Black and Hispanic/Latino students continue to be underrepresented in dual enrollment compared to both K-12 enrollments and undergraduate enrollments overall 8. Black students had equal or greater representation in dual enrollment in only 1 state (MA) and at only 74 community colleges—fewer than one in ten community colleges serving dual enrollment students nationally. 9. Hispanic/Latino students had greater or equal representation in dual enrollment in 18 states and at more than a third of community colleges nationally. 10. You can view the results for your state and college in the dashboards linked here: https://lnkd.in/gCSn9uRi Shout out to the many individuals and organizations pushing for better dual enrollment data nationally, and the countless hours writing the 2017 NPEC paper (Jason Taylor & Brian An!), at IPEDS technical review panels, and letters of support. With any new data reporting element there will be definition/reporting issues for some colleges, so if you are at a postsecondary institution take a look at your data and work with your IPEDS Keyholder to ensure these data continue to be accurate and useful for the field of practitioners, policymakers, and researchers working to broaden the benefits of dual enrollment! Our Complete College America Annual Convening full agenda is out. Want to call out that I'm leading a pre-conference session on strategic finance. When we talk about closing institutional performance gaps on graduation rates and other measures, we rarely bring in finance - both how much money colleges have to work with, and how much within a given budget to dedicate towards college completion. We need to be explicit in the dollars language behind our statements regarding equity and student success. This is stuff we'll grapple with - in addition to a wonderful line-up overall. #CCAAllIn2024 https://lnkd.in/g9KvE2Q4
