About us
Community Music Center of Boston (CMCB) is an arts education nonprofit founded in 1910, with a mission to transform lives by providing equitable access to excellent music education and arts experiences. Over 2,500 students participate in our programs every week. We are proud to act as the largest external provider of arts education to the Boston Public Schools, supporting learner-centered and culturally-inclusive musical instruction for one of the most diverse school districts in the nation. CMCB is a cornerstone for local arts education. We offer lessons and classes in our Community Music School; our Community Engagement Programs support participation in classroom music and music therapy at schools and community centers throughout Boston. Our Youth Employment Program offers well-paying jobs and opportunities for leadership development and workforce training in the arts. CMCB plays an important role in national conversations on cultural equity and creative youth development, with staff and faculty frequently featured in national forums presented by agencies like Sphinx, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the National Guild for Community Arts Education, Juilliard, Carnegie Hall, and more.

This morning was truly special as we welcomed Mayor Wu to our CMCB community! Our hearts were full after hearing beautiful performances from our talented students and witnessing a powerful, thought-provoking Q&A with our incredible youth employees. We left feeling so proud and inspired! A heartfelt thank you to Mayor Wu for connecting with our youth so genuinely and enthusiastically. Tune in to WBUR this morning to hear CMCB on the radio! ✨ Lecolion Washington, Executive Director and Rachel Chao, Community Engagement and Clinical Manager, will be joining a conversation live on WBUR's Radio Boston along with Michael Bobbitt, Executive Director of Mass Cultural Council, to discuss the CultureRX Program - a social prescription program funding free and low-cost referrals for patients to arts programming. CMCB was a participant of the initial three-year pilot program, which has recently been expanded statewide. We are looking forward to sharing more about our experience as part of this program. Seeing so many of our partners in East Boston come together for this big concert was amazing! Shout-out to our current partners, Mario Umana Academy, James Otis Elementary School, and Guild Elementary for their awesome band performances last Tuesday!
We held the East Boston Music Collective Concert at East Boston High School this week, which showcased amazing vocal and musical performances from East Boston students! The concert marks the second year of the collective - a 3-year effort focused on increasing quality, sequential music education across the district, starting in East Boston. #BPSArts4All

This summer, we’re teaming up with EdVestors as a Direct Service Partner for the Bloomberg Arts Internship Program! For many years, we’ve participated as a worksite for the 7-week program, directly supporting 2-3 youth interns throughout the summer. This year we will deepen our partnership and co-lead the entire cohort of 40+ students in collaboration with EdVestors' staff facilitating professional development, relationship building, and more! It is a great honor to continue expanding our work in creative youth development alongside some amazing partners including 826 Boston, College Advising Corps, and Muadi Dibinga Personal and Professional Coaching.
