Donors at every level come together to support our mission. One couple in Washington state has transformed their journey as grateful patients into a powerful commitment to health care and research. This year, they extended their legacy with a $10 million gift to Virginia Mason Franciscan Health and the Benaroya Research Institute (BRI). 🏛️🧬 This generosity supports groundbreaking autoimmune disease research and compassionate patient care. Their belief in advancing treatments for conditions like Type 1 diabetes has led to invaluable progress at BRI. Through their philanthropy, they’re not just giving back themselves; they are also inspiring others to make a lasting impact. 🤝🌟 Join us in celebrating this legacy of compassion and progress. Connecting communities with ways to improve health and further social justice for all through philanthropy.
About us
Everyone deserves access to high-quality care delivered with compassion. Believing this, CommonSpirit Health regards philanthropy as an important way to connect those with resources to those in need, and to offer an opportunity to express gratitude for the expertise, care, and kindness experienced throughout our ministry. CommonSpirit Health has 80+ affiliated fundraising entities located across the nation. These foundations raise funds in areas including social determinants of health, preventing and responding to human trafficking, addressing opioid abuse, and uniting against violence. This important work advances under the leadership of Fred Najjar, executive vice president, philanthropy and chief philanthropy officer, CommonSpirit Health. Our nonprofit fundraising entities enhance the lives of people in the communities we serve by raising funds to support hospital initiatives such as the expansion of emergency departments, purchases of state-of-the-art equipment, recruitment of nurses, administration of patient well-being programs, and procurement of educational outreach sponsorships—just to name a few. We do this broadly through CommonSpirit Health Foundation and locally through our network of regional and market-level fundraising entities. In response to the growing public health crisis posed by gun violence, CommonSpirit Health Foundation developed the Gun Safety and Education Initiative. This pilot program has successfully launched in multiple regions of CommonSpirit Health's 24-state footprint: CHI Saint Joseph Health in Kentucky and Virginia Mason Franciscan Health (VMFH) in Washington. The innovative program seeks to meet gun-owning families where they are and uses a multi-faceted approach to addressing and preventing gun violence to support families to adopt safe storage practices. The program’s activities include community-based education and awareness initiatives, provider screening in the adult primary care setting, and giving out tools and resources such as gun locks, which empower families to protect children by ensuring firearms are stored safely.
