The Forum provides resources, hosts learning events, and offers coaching that can help advance collective impact work. Learn more at collectiveimpactforum.org> About the Collective Impact Forum Since the 2011 Stanford Social Innovation Review article introduced the concept, collective impact has grown into a transformative movement. Though collective impact has proven to be a powerful approach in tackling a wide range of issues in communities all over the world, many practitioners lack the resources and connections they need to be successful in this work. The Collective Impact Forum provides them with access to tactical tools, training opportunities, and the shared knowledge of peer networks. The Collective Impact Forum is built in partnership with many others working to accelerate the collective impact movement.

🎙 PODCAST RECOMMENDATION: The latest Collective Impact Forum podcast episode really struck a chord. Working in #socialimpact can feel heavy at times, especially during the return from summer vacations and the change of seasons. In this episode, Trista Harris of FutureGood shares how applying #futurism can benefit the development of an organization or collaborative's social impact #strategy. Here are two things very practical things I am taking away: - We need to STOP 🛑 loving the problem. ("Foundations are the chief problem levers in the field.") Instead, set your strategy by imagining what it looks like if the system is fixed. - Set up #googlealerts for "Future of X" (insert topic/issue area) to inform your learning and point of view of the fixed system and what's coming. I just set up 4 alerts! Thanks for another informative and practical episode, CIF team! Tracy Timmons-Gray Jennifer Splansky Juster Courtney Williams Robertson #collectiveimpact

"The future doesn’t happen to us. We create it with the decisions that we make today. What the future needs and deserves is for each of us to be smart about what’s coming next and to build that future muscle." – Trista Harris When building a collaborative strategy or working through your implementation plans, it might feel like what you need most is a crystal ball (or a mystically accurate Magic 8 ball) to reveal which activities will work, which won’t, and where you can pivot so you and your partners can keep making progress. Moving ahead while surfing through ambiguity and questions like, “what will happen if…” can make the process of working together even more uncertain and stressful. The practice of futurism can be helpful when working through questions about where your collaborative work can go, and how your work may be affected by shifts in political, financial, environmental, and other conditions. In this new podcast episode, we explore how futurism can be used by collaboratives. We talk with Trista Harris, President of FutureGood, an organization that supports funders and nonprofits by tapping into future thinking. We discuss how these practices can support scenario-planning, risk mitigation, and imaging what an “ideal future” might be. In the discussion, we also explore the future trends that collectives may need to consider, including the impact of artificial intelligence (AI), disaster planning, and imagining a bright future when facing daunting challenges. Ways to listen: You can listen on our site or on your preferred podcast streamer, including Apple Podcasts and Spotify. 📽️ Wednesday Webinar Feature: The Collective Impact Forum Action Summit 2024 Session on Advancing Equity in Times of Polarization and Division featuring the The Aspen Institute Aspen Forum For Community Solutions (AFCS) Without proactively removing the structures and systems that have contributed to inequity, place-based collaboratives can not make a meaningful impact on the lives of those most excluded and underestimated in communities. However, given the increasing anti-DEI political and cultural headwinds unfolding in the US and several other countries, communities are facing increased challenges pursuing their equity work. To explore this topic, we share a video and podcast recording from the Day 3 opening panel discussion at the 2024 Collective Impact Action Summit. The panel discusses the challenges collaboratives are facing in their work to advance equity and how collaboratives can navigate through this adversity to continue making progress towards their collective goals. This session was originally held on May 2, 2024. Please find full video, audio, and a transcript further down this page. Featuring: Jennifer Splansky Juster, Executive Director, Collective Impact Forum Monique Miles, Managing Director, Aspen Institute Forum for Community Solutions Paul Schmitz, Senior Advisor, Collective Impact Forum; CEO, Leading Inside Out Junious Williams, Senior Advisor, Collective Impact Forum; Principal, Junious Williams Consulting, Inc. As facilitators of #systemchange and #systeminnovation, we have experienced first hand how identifying, working and challenging mindsets and assumptions can often make or break the journey towards a reimagined system or a successful partnership initiative. Once that work is done, how do you maintain the nature of collectiveness in partnerships while delivering tangible impact becomes the real challenge. We are always on a learning journey and are excited to learn more on this topic by joining FSG's virtual office hour with Dominique Samari and Paul Schmitz on September 24, 2-3 pm ET, to explore how backbones can effectively work toward this goal. See you there! ➡ Download the report here: https://lnkd.in/evqhATdJ ➡ Join the virtual office hour: https://lnkd.in/eMFwn3UE

"Skills and Mindset Shifts Are Essential for Collective Impact" 🌍✨ Just finished reading an insightful FSG report on Backbone Leadership by Dominique Samari & Paul Schmitz, which truly resonated with my own experiences. Collective impact initiatives often get off track by losing the "collective" or the "impact". In my experience, the real test comes after the honeymoon phase—when maintaining the "collective" becomes increasingly difficult. Partners rightfully want to see tangible results, which often leads to top-down decision-making. This puts pressure on the backbone organization (or partnership secretariat) to steer the process and advise on decisions, rather than facilitating co-creation and collective decision-making. Over the last 3 years, as the backbone organization of Millers for Nutrition, we've worked hard to uphold co-creative design workshops with our partners. Our goal has been to continually evolve the partnership and move forward together as a collective. To me, the gold standard is shifting from centering the backbone organization to aligning, motivating, and managing the network to act together (and more independently from the backbone). This approach, in my view, would make the backbone organization less prominent and further empower partners to take full leadership of the initiative. 🌟 I’m excited to join the virtual office hour with Dominique Samari and Paul Schmitz on September 24, 2-3 pm ET, to explore how backbones can effectively work toward this goal. ***New Resource Now Available - Backbone Leadership is Different: The Skills and Mindset Shifts Needed for Collective Impact https://lnkd.in/g3Ztm-De Leading a collective impact initiative is different than leading a traditional organization. Unlike a hierarchical organization, a successful collective impact initiative is a more horizontal network that requires a distributed leadership model among various roles and groups—steering committee members, workgroup co-chairs, implementation partners, and the backbone staff who facilitate, coordinate, and project manage the initiative. Engaging and motivating diverse actors with sometimes competing interests and agendas to change in order to align their work and move measurable results together takes a different kind of leadership. This new report, "Backbone Leadership is Different: The Skills and Mindset Shifts Needed for Collective Impact," authored by Dominique Samari and Paul Schmitz, draws from their observations partnering with and supporting dozens of collaboratives over the past 10 years. They share insights from successful backbone teams, highlighting three critical mindset shifts and six key skill sets. When these mindsets and skills exist across a backbone team, they enhance the team's ability to guide and facilitate collaboration, ultimately helping the collective achieve its shared goals.
