Coalition for the Homeless, Inc. reposted this
Last week, I had the honor of returning to First Step, a job training program for homeless and low-income women interested in careers in human services, at the Coalition for the Homeless, Inc. my first-year social work internship placement, to facilitate a workshop I developed during my time as a curriculum consultant with them: Diversity and Discrimination in the Workplace. This session felt especially meaningful because it centers on issues we can’t afford to ignore as we train the next leaders in the human services field. Women of colour make up the vast majority of the human services workforce of New York City and experience unique challenges as we are exposed to systemic oppression in life and at work and often have to support clients who navigate the same. Understanding how discrimination shows up in the workplace is critical—and so is understanding how we can actively work to dismantle it. Creating safer, more inclusive environments is not just a matter of policy, it’s about honoring the humanity of everyone we serve and work alongside and creating the space for real, vulnerable, authentic connection and community. I’m grateful to First Step for trusting me to lead this important conversation and for allowing me to return and build on the work we started. It’s a reminder of how crucial it is to create spaces that encourage reflection and action in our community. #EquityMatters #HumanServices #SocialJustice #WorkplaceDiversity #ConsultingWork

The Coalition for the Homeless is very excited to announce that Jamie Powlovich has joined our Advocacy Department in the newly created role of Supervisor of the New Arrivals Monitoring Team. As reported in POLITICO's New York Playbook, Jamie will lead the team monitoring the city’s compliance with its Right to Shelter obligations with respect to new arrivals. Formerly the Executive Director of the Coalition for Homeless Youth (CHY), Jamie has been a tireless advocate for runaway and homeless youth for almost 20 years. Deputy Executive Director for Advocacy Will Watts said about the appointment, “with the City continuing to fail in providing new arrivals with shelter and the critical assistance they need, having an effective advocate like Jamie leading our new arrivals monitoring efforts will only inure to the benefit of the entire new arrival community.” In joining the team, Jamie shared "I am excited to continue to fight to ensure that our newest New Yorkers are treated with dignity and respect and given the support they need and are entitled to."
