Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA)
Technology, Information and Internet
A global standards body responsible for publishing technical specifications for digital content provenance.
About us
The Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) was founded in 2021 and is led by Adobe, BBC, Google, Intel, Microsoft, Publicis Groupe, Sony, and Truepic. C2PA members work together to create open and interoperable technical standards for establishing digital content provenance and authenticity. The specifications are informed by scenarios, workflows, and requirements gathered from industry experts and partner organizations. The C2PA’s current work focuses on technical specifications for declaring the source and history (or provenance) of digital content in a tamper-evident manner. Content Credentials are the C2PA’s technical standard for tamper-resistant metadata that can be attached across various content types, including images, audio, video, and documents. Content Credentials function like a nutrition label for digital content, allowing creators to attach provenance to their content, such as creation date, tools used, and details of edits made along the way. In addition, a variety of open-source libraries and toolkits exist to enable anyone to integrate content provenance across web, desktop, and mobile implementations. For more information about the C2PA’s Content Credentials, visit: https://contentcredentials.org/ Technical specifications can be found here: https://c2pa.org/specifications/

Cutting-edge C2PA implementations were spotted at #IBC2024 this year! Here's a quick snapshot of what was on display: ➟ European Broadcasting Union (EBU): C2PA workflow, demonstrating an end-to-end, multi-vendor solution from capture and editing to signing, verification, and display. Partners include BBC, WDR, Adobe, Truepic, G&L, and netTrek. ➟ EZDRM: A POC showing how combining C2PA signing with CMCD data can allow a service provider to identify legitimate or pirated viewing sessions and allow content owners to determine the desired course of action to address the threat. ➟ G&L Systemhaus & Truepic: G&L & Truepic presented the first authentically streamed media for C2PA compliance tailored for European broadcasters. ➟ IPTC: The International Press Telecommunications Council (IPTC) has announced Phase 1 of the IPTC Verified News Publishers List at the International Broadcast Convention (IBC). ➟ Media Cluster Norway: Project Reynir with presentations from Mimir, Vizrt, Cutting Room, Fonn Group, and Wolftech—leading C2PA implementations from Norway's West Coast. ➟ NHK: A prototype video player with C2PA provenance verification, allowing real-time verification of content provenance while watching VOD streaming. —— Andrew Jenks | Andy Parsons | Judy Parnall | Jules Cassano | Nick Brown | Sherif Hanna | Brendan Quinn | Helge O. Over the coming months, Google will integrate the latest version of C2PA #ContentCredentials into Search and Ads. The "About this image" feature will provide context on images created or edited using AI tools, while C2PA metadata will be used to inform ad policy enforcement. Additionally, Google is exploring ways to relay #C2PA information on YouTube and will validate content authenticity using the forthcoming C2PA Trust list. The Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) has formally partnered with TWAIN Working Group (TWG) to advance our shared missions. As part of this collaboration, TWG will offer technical coaching to integrate C2PA’s #ContentCredentials into TWAIN Direct document scanning applications, further strengthening the adoption and impact of content provenance standards.
TWAIN Working Group and the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) enter into a Liaison Partnership Agreement Collaboration emphasizes TWAIN’s commitment to security for the TWAIN Direct scanning standard Raleigh, NC – August 27, 2024 – The TWAIN Working Group (TWG), a not-for-profit organization providing and fostering a universal public standard for image acquisition sources including smart phone cameras, document scanning devices, multifunction peripherals and folder drives, announced today that TWG and the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) have joined forces to further one another’s mission and adoption through a formal partnership and ongoing collaboration. As the first activity with this new liaison partnership, TWG will be offering technical coaching to integrate the C2PA’s Content Credentials standard into TWAIN Direct document scanning applications during the upcoming TWAIN Direct Developers Day event. With the explosion of interest in generative A.I. and easy digital content creation, it is more important than ever for content consumers to be able to quickly identify the source information for this content whether it is audio, video or images. From royal family photoshop incidents to fraudulent airline inspection certificates and waybills (leading to gold heists) the negative impact of not including Content Credentials is rapidly increasing. It is fast becoming a requirement for a clear visual symbol as well as automatic content creation checking credentials to determine the source and trustworthiness of this content within digital workflow solutions. Through its standard, Content Credentials, the C2PA addresses the prevalence of misleading information online through the development of technical standards for certifying the source and history (or provenance) of media content, such as images. Content Credentials provides publishers, creators, and consumers the ability to trace the origin of different types of media. The TWAIN Direct standard supports direct network communication between mobile and/or desktop applications and document scanning devices, including cloud and mobile platforms. TWAIN Direct addresses the need for something simple and direct that expedites application development and provides a customizable and feature-rich scanning experience. Congratulations to Leonard Rosenthol for being selected as the Co-Chair of the Technical Pillar of the three major world standards bodies, ISO - International Organization for Standardization, IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission), and International Telecommunication Union, in the area of AI and media authenticity. As the Chair of the Technical Working Group for the #C2PA, he is well positioned to advance the importance of content provenance and continue the very strong momentum of #ContentCredentials adoption. His nomination to this role is an outcome of the AI for Good Summit 2024 in which organizations, including the C2PA, agreed to collaborate on global standards for #AI watermarking, multimedia authenticity, and #deepfake detection to support government policies, protect digital rights, and address emerging challenges. The standards collaboration is open to global and regional standards organizations, governments, tech companies, industry initiatives, and other relevant organizations involved in this space. At the launch of USAID’s Democracy, Human Rights, and Governance Policy last week, Truepic’s Mounir Ibrahim discussed how to bring multiple stakeholders together to promote democracy-affirming technology. Digital content provenance is a promising approach that has become a widely adopted best practice. “We live in a digitized world. That means we’re making personal, professional, business, governmental, and multilateral decisions off what we see and hear online. We need to have transparency and authenticity in what we see and hear online to make accurate decisions,” said Mounir Ibrahim. Sensodyne is Haleon's first brand to use #ContentCredentials by the C2PA in U.S. digital ads to confirm that dentists endorsing Sensodyne are, in fact, real dentists and not paid actors. In this Ad Age article by Jack Neff, Katie Williams, U.S. Chief Marketing Officer for Haleon, highlights that 75% of consumers surveyed said they want some type of transparency indicator in #ads. Additionally, research shows a lift in brand equity for digital media with Content Credentials attached. Although Content Credentials is nascent in advertising, “Haleon’s experience suggests more brands may find it pays to adopt the technology.” https://lnkd.in/gA53KBUd
