A team of researchers from CyberArch at The University of Georgia (UGA) have introduced a groundbreaking method for prioritizing cybersecurity actions within organizations. 🌐   In their report, "A Swarm Intelligence Approach to Prioritizing the CIS Controls V8.0 Implementation," UGA researchers Hayat Abdulla Asad Cue, Thirimachos Bourlai, and Mark Lupo explore how algorithms inspired by nature—like the behavior of swarms of insects—can help rank actions in the Center for Internet Security (CIS) framework. This innovative approach aims to guide resource-constrained organizations, such as rural hospitals, city governments, and small businesses, in taking the most effective and cost-efficient steps to bolster their cybersecurity. Abdulla Asad Cue and Mark Lupo presented this work at the 2024 #CyberCivilDefense Summit in June! The report was published as part of CLTC’s 2024 Public Interest Cybersecurity Research Call for Papers, which aimed to support research that would increase the body of knowledge about cybersecurity for US-based communities and organizations that often fall through the cracks of #CyberCivilDefense. How can we turn humans from the weakest link in cybersecurity into our strongest defense? 🌟Paula Starr, Chief Information Officer of Cherokee Nation, believes the answer lies in getting more people involved in cybersecurity and making the field more accessible and understandable. Cybersecurity isn't just a concern for IT staff—it's a shared responsibility that requires everyone's participation. “We need to get the rest of our workforce more involved in cyber. It needs to be less clinical, more human—focused on what we’re actually protecting," said Starr. ICYMI, NIST dropped its revised GenAI Risk Management Profile and its markedly different from the initial public draft we saw back in April. I had the chance to talk to the great Gabby Miller at Tech Policy Press about some of the changes, including how the profile still doesn't say much about the impacts of generative AI on the labor market and workplace. Some other changes to keep an eye out for are that they cut the notion of “foundational” or minimum risk management actions; many of the previous suggested actions have moved or been cut entirely; there is much less of a focus on auditing than there used to be; the suggested content to include in a genAI inventory is significantly reduced; they cut language about evidence of deception from AI models; and some actions (around disclosure and documentation for example) are more watered down. It is still a really comprehensive and helpful resource, but the changes are notable and worth being aware of.

Formerly known as Citizen Clinic, the UC Berkeley Cybersecurity Clinic has adopted a new name as it enters an exciting new era! ✨ Under the leadership of a new director, Elijah Baucom (MBA, MS-TSM), the program is poised to train a record number of students this year, while reconnecting with nearly 200 alumni and expanding beyond the 25 U.S. and international non-profit clients served to date. This year, the clinic will continue to work with a cohort of partner organizations, including an expanded roster of reproductive rights organizations and other groups that focus on gender-based violence. Other aspirations for the clinic in 2024-25 include conducting a survey to strengthen connections with the program’s alumni, and building bridges to other clinics across the University of California, Berkeley campus, including the Human Rights Clinic and the Samuelson Law Technology Public Policy Clinic at the University of California, Berkeley - School of Law, among others.
