The Center for Long-Term Cybersecurity is excited to be a partner on the Take9 campaign! When you see something online that doesn't seem right, take a 9 second pause, and think. Don't click, download or share. A short pause goes a long way. Together, we can strengthen America’s security and resiliency by forming communities of cyber defenders. Protect your private information and the nation. Learn more about the #Take9 campaign: https://lnkd.in/gHAZtzne

A team of researchers from Idaho National Laboratory (INL) has published a new CLTC white paper exploring the crucial role of cybersecurity in ensuring equitable energy access. In their report, "Cyber Resilience and Social Equity: Twin Pillars of a Sustainable Energy Future," Emma Stewart, Remy Stolworthy, and Virginia Wright advocate for secure energy systems that do not compromise efforts to reduce energy poverty. The paper highlights the need for technologies like cyber-informed engineering and secure-by-design principles to protect critical infrastructure and ensure energy access for disadvantaged communities. The report also emphasizes workforce development and calls for public-private partnerships to support small and medium-sized utilities, which often lack the resources available to larger utilities. The authors stress that fostering innovation, and enhancing workforce skills are key to addressing cybersecurity gaps and creating a resilient and inclusive U.S. energy grid. 📑 Read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/dUVvdJAx Stewart, Chief Power Grid Scientist, and Stolworthy, Cyber Vulnerability Analyst, presented this work at the 2024 #CyberCivilDefense Summit in June. The report was published as part of CLTC’s 2024 Public Interest Cybersecurity Research Call for Papers, supporting research that increases the body of knowledge on cybersecurity for U.S.-based communities and organizations often left behind by #CyberCivilDefense initiatives.

We are proud to see CLTC's Sarah Powazek speaking at this year's ONE Conference! Powazek participated in a panel on "The Future of Cyber Volunteering Across the Atlantic," which explored cutting-edge cyber volunteering programs in the U.S. and around the world and compare the American and European strategies for protecting community-based organizations. Powazek shared how cyber clinics like those within The Consortium of Cybersecurity Clinics have adapted to European institutions under the leadership of Max Smeets, Co-Director of the European Cyber Conflict Research Initiative and a fellow co-panelist. Other co-panelists, Matthew R. Grote and Stéphane Duguin, showcased the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s High Risk Community Protection Initiative (HRCPI) and the CyberPeace Institute’s CyberPeace Builders programs to the international audience. 🌎#CyberCivilDefense🌎

Yesterday, Sarah Powazek, Director of CLTC's Public Interest Cybersecurity Program, helped kick off the "Beyond 125 Years: Securing Our World's Digital Future" conference! Hosted by CyberPeace Institute, Global Cyber Alliance, and Gemeente Den Haag at the Peace Palace, #Beyond125 convenes global leaders, cyber defenders, and philanthropists to take action for the digital safety of NGOs, including through the creation of a dedicated fund for cybersecurity. Powazek spoke on a panel titled, "A Way Forward to Peace and Justice in Cyberspace," in which she talked about the importance of using a community security vs. a national security lens in cybersecurity. She also talked about how university cybersecurity clinics in The Consortium of Cybersecurity Clinics provide local benefit by training students and providing critical cyber assessments to local organizations and nonprofits. Shoutout to Powazek's co-panelists on this important discussion! Adrien Ogee, Inge Bryan, Tal Goldstein, and Alethea Hannemann #cybercivildefense #beyond125_thehague #CSW2024 #cyberclinics
At this moment, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, NGO leaders, donors, impact investors, civil servants, cybersecurity experts, and diplomats are gathering at the iconic Carnegie Foundation - Peace Palace for BEYOND125: Securing Our World’s Digital Future. Their shared mission is to help over 10 million nonprofits defend against rising cyber threats. Nonprofits, the unsung heroes of peace and justice, face constant cyberattacks in today’s digital age. The CyberPeace Institute, the Global Cyber Alliance and the Gemeente Den Haag (City of The Hague) are taking the lead in this mission with today's conference. During the event an action plan will be unveiled, aimed at providing nonprofits access to critical cybersecurity resources and services. Already, influential partners like Microsoft have pledged their support, with €500K in funding raised and more on the horizon. #Cybersecurity, #CSW2024, #beyond125_thehague, #commongoodcyber, #cybercivildefense Digitaal Veilig Den Haag

A team of UC Berkeley students affiliated with the UC Berkeley School of Information and UC Berkeley Electrical Engineering & Computer Sciences (EECS) Department recently participated in the Artificial Intelligence Cyber Challenge (AIxCC), a national competition sponsored by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), a research and development agency of the United States Department of Defense. The team was supported by a $5,000 research award donated by UC Berkeley alum and cybersecurity expert Tim Mather (Class of ‘81). The goal of their project, “A CodeLM Automated Repair Program with Analysis, Planning, and Control,” was to develop an automated, AI-based code repair solution that combines both vulnerability detection and patch generation. The team’s project was accepted into the competition, accelerating them to become semi-finalists. While the group did not compete in-person at DEF CON 2024 in Las Vegas, their participation had a significant impact on the entire competition. The team discovered a serious vulnerability within the files provided by DARPA as part of the challenge, which they reported to the organizers, leading DARPA to send a security patch to all participants. We interviewed the team’s tech lead, Marsalis G., to learn more about the team’s experience: https://lnkd.in/g-Sk2pUm Congrats to the whole team! Samuel B.erston, Marlon Fu, Marsalis G.ibson, Kat Hernandez, Francisco Laplace, Gerald Musumba, Narayanan Potti, Ansuv Sikka, and Lawrence Wagner.

A new report from Michael R.azeeq and New America spotlights how states are establishing Civilian Cyber Corps (C3s) — organizations that facilitate cyber volunteer services — to help address cyber workforce challenges, improve their cyber resiliency, and develop cyber emergency response capabilities across the country. Michael's report references how university cybersecurity clinics like those at the University of California, Berkeley and others in The Consortium of Cybersecurity Clinics as well as other cyber volunteer efforts coordinated by nonprofits like CyberPeace Institute are taking a "whole-of-society approach" to cybersecurity. Congratulations, Michael, on this fantastic contribution toward the #CyberCivilDefense ecosystem. Read the report here: https://lnkd.in/g-REUTke
