🌀 WEATHER UPDATES We hope that you and your families remained safe throughout Hurricane #Milton. Our hearts are with our neighbors to the north who experienced the worst of the storm's impact. Hurricane Milton made landfall as a Category 3 Hurricane near Siesta Key in Sarasota County around 8:30 pm yesterday and continued northeastward, delivering significant wind, rain and flooding impacts as it moved through towards Cape Canaveral on Florida's east coast. According to National Hurricane Center advisories, this storm is forecast to continue eastward out into the Atlantic Ocean where it will weaken into a post-tropical cyclone. The previous Tornado Watch and Tropical Storm Warning in Broward are now canceled. Metro Broward County is under a #Wind Advisory until 4 pm today, which means that sustained winds up to 30 miles per hour and gusts up to 40 miles per hours are possible. Please use extra caution and stay home as long as you are able while our first responders and Public Works professionals assess Sunrise's roadways and communities. In the immediate aftermath of any storm, it's advisable to stay indoors and remain off the roadways to avoid potentially hazardous conditions and allow crews to perform cleanup and recovery efforts. Thank you for your cooperation! 🏛️ GOVERNMENT UPDATES All City of Sunrise non-emergency operations, including parks, programs, and facilities, are closed today and are expected to re-open for business as usual on Friday. The City has an active Emergency Declaration and we continue our emergency operations in response to Hurricane Milton. It is anticipated that garbage and recycling will continue to be collected today as regularly scheduled; however, we ask residents to please refrain from placing bulk trash items curbside. Our Public Works division is vigilant about helping the community before, during, and after storms. To report issues with City roadways, waterways and drainage/flooding that is not receding, contact the Public Works Division at [email protected]. For assistance on weekdays after 4:00 pm or on weekends, please call (954) 888-6087 or (954) 764-4357. 🏫 BROWARD SCHOOLS Broward Schools and district offices will be closed today, October 10th. Sunrise Mayor Michael J. Ryan was recently elected to serve on the Florida League Of Mayors Board of Directors. “I am honored to work alongside Mayors from around the entire state on the issues that are so important to our residents and businesses,” said Mayor Ryan, who has served as Mayor since 2010. “We must tackle skyrocketing auto and property insurance premiums; address the impact of the new condominium reserve law; find more resources for our Veterans, especially in the area of mental and medical health; create new and innovative ways to help our small business community by cutting red-tape and regulations to help them to open economically and on time, while inspiring them to grow more jobs and be successful; and work together on the environmental impacts of flooding, sea-level rise and saltwater intrusion into our aquifers.” Since 2005, the Florida League of Mayors has served as the official nonpartisan organization representing Florida’s mayors. As a membership-driven association that was founded and developed by mayors, the organization’s primary duty is to ensure active advocacy and provide a powerful platform for Florida’s mayors to speak out on issues of important interest to their cities and citizens. "The Florida League of Mayors is proud to welcome its new board members, whose leadership and vision will help guide the organization toward a brighter future," said Jeff Branch, Executive Director of the Florida League of Mayors. "This body is committed to advancing the priorities of its constituents and ensuring that every city across Florida thrives." The organization, staffed by the Florida League of Cities, provides the mayors of Florida with the ability to explore, in great depth, areas of mutual concern and opportunity. This year, under President Nancy Miller, the Florida League of Mayors will focus on helping to bring business to Florida’s cities. This is an important issue for Florida’s communities, as local businesses attract people to our cities to live and shop. Mayors play a critical role in helping drive economic development in our communities. To learn more about the Florida League of Mayors, visit floridamayors.org.
