About us

Ferris is a city in Dallas and Ellis counties in the state of Texas. It is 20 miles south of downtown Dallas and is knowns as, "The City that Bricked the World". Settlement of the area began in the early 1870s. On September 28, 1874, a local family deeded approximately 100 acres (0.40 km2) of land to four trustees for the establishment of a town and railway station.[6] Judge Justus Wesley Ferris of Waxahachie handled the transaction, and the community was named for him. Within ten years, Ferris had a population of 300 with a post office, gristmills, cotton gins, four churches, and a school.[7] On September 18, 1882, an election was held to incorporate the community. A total of 47 votes were cast – 34 (72%) in favor of incorporation and 13 (28%) against.[6] The results were verified by the Ellis County Judge on September 30, and Ferris officially became a town. By 1900, the town was home to 904 residents. In 1910, that number had increased to 1,233 residents.[7] Fifty businesses, including six brick plants that benefitted from the area's mineral rich soil, were operating in 1914. The population rose to 1,586 by 1925 but declined during the 1930s and 1940s as a result of the Great Depression and World War II.[8] Ferris thrived during the early post-war years. Four brick plants operated during the 1950s, and the community was known locally as the "Brick Capital of the Nation".[7] Ferris also has a second nickname – "The City that Bricked the World" – which is still commonly used to date. In 1952, the population had risen to 1,734 and 1,807 by 1964. The Ferris Annual Brick Festival is held every year at the end of April.[8] The expansion of the Dallas–Fort Worth Metropolitan Area and the construction of Interstate 45 aided the growth of Ferris in the latter half of the twentieth century. Although the number of businesses decreased during the 1980s, the population continued to grow.

At the City of Ferris, we believe in a workforce that thrives on purpose, growth, and accountability. As our City Manager so eloquently shared, the talent crisis in public administration is more than a conversation—it’s an urgent call to action. We’re committed to reshaping how we support and develop our team, ensuring that each member sees their value every day, not just in the mission statement. By fostering an environment where flexibility, honest feedback, and leadership at all levels are the standard, we aim to build a public service that leads by example. At Ferris, our workforce isn’t just a part of the story—it is the story. Together, we’re driving innovation and impact for a brighter future. Retain. Develop. Elevate. We’re proud to lead the way.

In public administration, the talent crisis we’re facing is no longer just a conversation topic; it’s an emergency. Let’s be clear: if we don’t seriously rethink how we approach workforce development, we will fail, and the consequences for our communities will be severe. Retention is not about pizza parties or ‘employee appreciation days.’ It’s about creating roles that matter - where people see their value daily, not just in the mission statement. It’s about eliminating silos and flattening hierarchies, allowing teams to drive real impact without bureaucratic choke points. Want to know why we’re bleeding talent? It’s because we’ve spent too long stagnating. We have to stop treating workforce development like a checklist item and start treating it like the lifeblood of high performance. That means giving people room to grow, investing in leadership at every level, and demanding that our own leadership confronts the reality that our workforce is our most powerful strategic asset. If you want retention, here’s the hard truth: you need to create a work environment where people would fight to stay. This means: • High-accountability cultures that demand excellence but provide the tools and support to achieve it. • Flexibility where it counts, not as a perk but as the default. • Brutal honesty about performance, not just platitudes about ‘exceeding expectations’, but targeted growth, real feedback, and clear, actionable paths forward. Public service doesn’t need to mimic the private sector - it needs to lead by example. The cities that get workforce development right will not only survive - they’ll thrive. The rest? They’ll become a cautionary tale. Stop talking about ‘talent pipelines’ and start building talent ecosystems - where growth, innovation, and impact aren’t optional - they’re required. Because at the end of the day, our workforce isn’t the side story, it’s the whole story. Retain. Develop. Elevate. The future of public service depends on it. #WorkforceDevelopment #PublicAdministration #Leadership #HighAccountability #FutureOfGovernment #EmployeeGrowth #Retention #SeriousSolutions #MunicipalExcellence

The City of Ferris was Proud to Partner with La Flare's Barbershop for Our 4th Annual "First Responders & Fresh Fades" Back to School Event! This year, we were privileged to host the event at our brand new Marty Steinfeldt Public Safety Building. It was a fantastic day, with volunteers from the community coming together to offer free haircuts, and our generous sponsors donating school supplies for students. We are thrilled to have served around 100 students this past Friday! A huge thank you to our sponsors, volunteers, and all who attended. Your support made this event a success! #Community #BackToSchool #FirstResponders #GivingBack #Education #CommunityEngagement
