This morning, the Mayor’s Reading Club visited Browns Mill Elementary. Mayor Cobble talked with students about our local hometown heroes. Several students shared stories about family, friends, and neighbors who worked at places like the hospital, fire department, police precinct, and more.

The City of Stonecrest has passed a modification to its Chapter 27 Zoning Ordinance, ushering in a new era of innovative housing solutions with the approval of Micro Home Communities (MHC). This amendment allows for the establishment of dwellings in Stonecrest that are less than 800 square feet. This MHC approval from City Council signifies a commitment to addressing the evolving housing needs of the Stonecrest community while fostering sustainable development practices. By permitting Micro Homes in designated areas such as the Stonecrest Area Overlay, Tiers 2, 3, 4, and 5, through underlying high-density zoning districts of HR-1, HR-2, and HR-3, Stonecrest is embracing progressive urban planning principles. Mayor Cobble expressed enthusiasm for the passage of this ordinance, stating, "This modification marks a pivotal moment in our city's history. It reflects our dedication to fostering diverse, inclusive neighborhoods and providing affordable housing options for residents of all backgrounds. By embracing Micro Home Communities, we are promoting sustainable development and enhancing the vibrancy of our city." Micro Home Communities offer numerous benefits to residents and the community at large, including reduced environmental impact, increased affordability, and a sense of community cohesion. Mayor Jazzmin Cobble joined students at Stoneview Elementary to celebrate National Read Across America Day. This years National Read Across America Day also kicks off the Mayor’s Reading Club, focused on educating students on the roles and responsibilities of local governments.

The City of Stonecrest has approved a Food Truck Ordinance, a modification to Chapter 15 Licenses, Permits, and Miscellaneous Business Regulations. This progressive ordinance outlines "vending operations rules," fostering a vibrant culinary scene and bolstering economic opportunities within our community. Accepting application beginning March 1, 2024, the Food Truck Ordinance marks a significant step forward in promoting culinary diversity and entrepreneurship in Stonecrest. Food trucks and mobile vending/food carts will now be permitted in all overlay districts through the underlying zoning districts of RE, RLG, R-100, R-85, R-75, R-60, RMS, MR-1, HR-1, 2, 3, C-1, C-2, OD, OI, M, and M-2 zoning districts with a Special Administrative Permit (SAP). Mayor Jazzmin Cobble expressed her enthusiasm, stating, "The approval of the Food Truck Ordinance reflects our commitment to supporting small businesses, promoting culinary innovation, and enhancing the vibrancy of our city. By streamlining the permitting process and expanding opportunities for food truck operators, we are fostering an environment where entrepreneurs can thrive while providing our residents with diverse dining options." Mayor Jazzmin Cobble, along with Councilwoman Tammy Grimes, Councilwoman Tara Graves, and Councilwoman Alecia Washington, were acknowledged for their outstanding commitment to professional development and excellence in municipal governance. Each Councilmember received a certificate recognizing their achievements. The accolades were conferred as part of the Harold F. Holtz Municipal Training Institute, a series of programs aimed at enhancing the knowledge and skills of city officials in various municipal matters. These courses, conducted in partnership with the University of Georgia’s Carl Vinson Institute of Government, offer officials the opportunity to go above and beyond the mandated state requirements for training. Mayor Jazzmin Cobble and Councilwoman Tammy Grimes received the Certificate of Achievement, a testament to their dedication and completion of 72 hours of training, including 36 hours from the required list and the Newly Elected Officials Institute. Councilwoman Tara Graves and Councilwoman Alecia Washington earned Certificates of Recognition for their respective accomplishments, which required 48 hours of training, including 18 hours from the required list and the Newly Elected Official Institute. The Harold F. Holtz Municipal Training Institute provides officials with valuable opportunities for continued education and professional growth. Courses are offered in conjunction with GMA meetings as well as in standalone sessions throughout the year. The Municipal Training Institute is a joint initiative of the Georgia Municipal Association and the University of Georgia’s Carl Vinson Institute of Government, overseen by the Municipal Training Board. Mayor Jazzmin Cobble and Stonecrest City Councilmembers' recognition at the 2024 Cities United Summit underscores their commitment to serving the community with excellence, ensuring that Stonecrest remains at the forefront of effective municipal governance.

The City of Stonecrest is currently in the process of updating our 2038 Comprehensive Plan. As part of this endeavor, we have scheduled seven community meetings to engage with stakeholders and gather feedback. Last night marked the inaugural session of our seven-part series of community engagement meetings. We encourage community stakeholders to attend at least one session. All meetings will start promptly at 6pm.
