The City of Johns Creek marked the installation of its newest public art piece, “Playful Passages,” which features iron salvaged from the historic former Rogers Bridge over the Chattahoochee River.
City Council member Bob Erramilli joined City staff, the artist, and representatives Johns Creek Recreation & Parks Advisory Committee (RPAC), the Arts, Culture and Entertainment (ACE) Committee, Johns Creek Convention & Visitors Bureau, Johns Creek Historical Society, and The Art Center at Johns Creek for a ribbon cutting ceremony on Monday.
Created by artist Julia Hill, the art piece is located at Morton Road Park, 4860 Morton Road. The artwork was made possible through the partnership and collaborative efforts of the Johns Creek Convention & Visitors Bureau, RPAC, and the Johns Creek Arts, Cultural, and Entertainment Committee. The artist mentioned how the piece symbolizes a bridge between past and present and includes reimagining the purpose of the original material.
This pocket park located near State Bridge Road features a playground, picnic shelter, half basketball court, pavilion, multi-use path, rain garden, and an open space.
The art project underlines the City’s commitment to Arts & Culture as a City Council-driven Strategic Priority this year. From community partnerships to public art, City Council is focusing on a strategic plan for arts, culture, supporting performing arts, and creating an arts district. Earlier in 2024, Council adopted a new policy encouraging public art and establishing the appropriateness of the City having a role in public art. Council is seeking to define its role in arts and culture and strives to strengthen the partnership with The Arts Center.
