The Charlotte City Council has approved the purchase of the #RedLine. More specifically, #CLTCC has approved the purchase of approximately 22 miles of the O-Line railroad right-of-way, track improvements, and real property rights for $74 million as well as approximately 1.6 acres of real property and any associated property rights located near the Charlotte Gateway Station for $17 million. This corridor preservation will allow for the Red Line commuter rail project to be implemented in the future. The Charlotte City Council has voted (10-1) to adopt a resolution in support of legislation authorizing a sales tax referendum. What does this mean? The resolution supports the formation of a new regional transit authority, made up of local jurisdictions in Mecklenburg County. Together, this coalition of local governments is seeking authorization from the North Carolina General Assembly for a public referendum on the proposed one-cent sales tax increase. This increase will allow for further investment in roadway and public transportation systems. The proposed sales tax increase would also allow the region to leverage substantial federal grant funding that is available for investment in transportation network infrasctructure, which requires a percentage match of local funding to utilize. On June 24, 2024, Charlotte City Council approved the allocation of $2.5 million to help fund the Katie Blessing Center. This approval came a year and a half after Michael Estramonte and his team purchased the future site of the facility from the City of Charlotte. Named after Estramonte's mother—a New York-based teacher dedicated to helping children in her community—the Katie Blessing Center will provide mental and behavioral health services to children across the region. The project has received invaluable support from the city, county, and state, but they are still $12 million shy of their funding needs. Once the remaining funds are secured, construction can begin. Estramonte anticipates the facility being in full use in mid-2026, but they plan to open the building in phases once construction begins. Last weekend (Aug. 22-24), the City of Charlotte hosted the 49th Annual Summer Conference of the North Carolina Association of Municipal Clerks at the beautiful Ballantyne Hotel. There was record attendance at the annual conference with approximately 167 registered city, town, and village clerks from across the state. This year’s conference theme was “One Person Can Make a Difference,” and in keeping with that theme, attendees demonstrated just that... Each year, the host clerk is asked to identify a local community service project that conference attendees can support with contributions. City Clerk Stephanie C. Kelly chose Classroom Central, an organization dedicated to supporting teachers and students in need by providing free school supplies and essential teacher resources. Kelly is pictured alongside Deputy City Clerk Billie Fruit-Tynes with the generous donations from conference attendees. Thank you to everyone at the International Institute of Municipal Clerks - Region 3! #IIMC #IIMCRegion3 #NCAMC #MunicipalClerks #CommunityService

This first-of-its-kind event is poised to bring international chefs and businesses to the Queen City, and its all thanks to Justin Fry of JF Chocolat. Recognizing a void in the American pastry landscape, Fry decided to combine his love for chocolate with his love for Charlotte and start #PastryCon, which he hopes will stay here in for years to come. Get to know Fry and Tonia Bryant of Sweet Peony Wedding Cakes, who will be competing in one of PastryCon's many competitions, in our exclusive interview. Want to learn more about PastryCon?
