Today my team and I kicked off our series of trainings as part of the Equity & Inclusion Academy hosted by the City of Boston | Equity and Inclusion Cabinet. Our training, “Addressing the Social Determinants of Health with an Equity Lens,” provides City leaders and decision-makers with an overview of the social determinants of health and other key concepts, gives opportunity to assess how the work of their respective departments influence the social determinants of health, and shares tools they can implement to address the social determinants of health relevant to their work. As we all support the same constituents, this training allows other City departments to center health equity in all functions of their work and highlights the need for cross-sectoral collaboration. I’m super proud of my team and look forward to educating more City employees in the trainings to come.

Building Bridges Education & Black Male Advancement Presents: My Brother’s Keeper HBCU College Forum We are excited to invite Black young men from high schools across Boston to participate in the My Brother’s Keeper HBCU Forum. This event is designed specifically for high school juniors and seniors and will include interactive workshops, resource tables from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), a panel discussion, and on-site college interviews. Wednesday, October 16th, 2024 8am-2pm Bruce C. Bolling Municipal Building 2300 Washington St. Boston, MA 02119 This will be part of a larger HBCU roadshow, which we will share general events in the coming days. Burnham, a resident of Jamaica Plain, will coordinate the research and writing. She will conduct research on the legal landscape relevant to the legacies of slavery from 1940 to 2020. Burnham is Distinguished University Professor at Northeastern, where she teaches law and Africana Studies, focusing on civil rights law, history and practice. Burnham served as a judge and civil rights attorney in Boston. Her book, By Hands Now Known: Jim Crow’s Legal Executioners (2022) won numerous awards, including the Los Angeles Times Book Prize, the Zora Neal Hurston/Richard Wright Prize, and the Sidney Hillman Prize for excellent social justice investigation. She was recognized by the Massachusetts Humanities Counsel in 2023 for her “dedication to exploring history, illuminating truth and confronting injustice. . .”. Burnham holds a law degree from the University of Pennsylvania and a BA (History) from Tougaloo College. To learn more about her and the task force visit boston.gov/equity
