The Public Service Commission’s decision to reduce proposed rate hikes for Superior Water, Light, and Power customers is a positive step, signaling that profits need to come down for this and other monopoly utilities. However, commissioners could have gone further to rein in profits and ease the increase even more. Originally, the utility sought an 18% water, 17.1% natural gas, and 2.2% electric rate hike, but these were cut to 10.9%, 14.6%, and 1.3%, saving customers about $171,500. CUB’s analysis shows that affordability is a critical issue in Superior, where economic challenges make rising utility bills especially hard for residents. Senator Rob Cowles (R-Green Bay) released a statement after submitting comments to the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin (PSC) encouraging the Commissioners to either dramatically revise or outright reject rate increases proposed by Wisconsin Public Service Corporation (WPS). His strong stance supports CUB’s ongoing efforts to protect Wisconsin ratepayers from unreasonable utility cost increases. The Public Service Commission of Wisconsin hosted two public hearings in Ashwaubenon last Thursday, to hear local opinions regarding a proposal by Wisconsin Public Service to raise gas and electric rates, effective Jan. 1, 2025, and Jan. 1, 2026. “A 28% increase between 2022 and 2026 is a lot for anybody to handle,” said Tom Content, executive director of the Citizens Utility Board of Wisconsin. “And in particular, we’re worried about people who are already struggling to make ends meet.” The Citizen’s Utility Board is proposing a lower increase.
