About us

The mission of Communities In Schools of North Texas is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. There is no single reason why students drop out of school. Nor is dropping out of school a sudden decision. Dropping out is a result of a long process of disengagement that may begin even before a child enters school. It is a cumulative process, brought about by any number of individual, family, community or school risk factors. More than 1/3 of the students who drop out of high school fail to make the transition from 9th to 10th grade. Repeating a grade is the most significant school related risk factor associated with dropping out. CISNT currently operates school-based dropout prevention programs in Bridgeport ISD, Denton ISD, Gainesville ISD, Lake Dallas ISD, Lewisville ISD, and Northwest ISD. CISNT is a 501(c)3 non profit organization.

  • Did you know? According to the Department of Health and Human Services, one-third of high school students report ongoing feelings of hopelessness. Additionally, about 122 million Americans reside in regions where there is a critical shortage of mental health professionals, with a deficit exceeding 6,000 practitioners. To address the growing youth mental health crisis in America, Texas is collaborating with ten other states, the Schultz Family Foundation, Pinterest, and AmeriCorps to introduce the nation’s first Youth Mental Health Corp. This initiative aims to recruit, train, and deploy dedicated members to help teenagers access essential mental health resources. CISNT Youth Mental Health Corps is a great opportunity to invest in the mental wellbeing of North Texas Students. CISNT Youth Mental Health Corps members will acquire practical experience, receive financial stipends, and earn career-advancing credentials. Additionally, they will qualify for education awards that can be used for further studies or to pay off student loans. Applications for the Spring Semester are now open! • Congratulations to our Associate Volunteer Coordinator, Amber Shattuck, on 15 years with CISNT! Amber started her time with CISNT as an intern while earning her Social Work Degree at UNT. She has worked with every grade level and multiple school districts during her time with Communities In Schools of North Texas. Amber worked in our afterschool programs at Peters Colony and Hedrick Elementary, and at our daytime programs at Calhoun Middle School, Denton High School and Lewisville High School. During her time at LHS, Amber was instrumental in providing resources and developing partnerships to aid students who had experienced homelessness. In 2014, Amber was promoted to Director of Volunteers and developed the amazing volunteer program that we have today. During her time as Director, she established key partnerships with UNT, TWU, and many local churches and organizations that helped to provide caring adults for our CISNT students. In 2020, Amber changed to part time to focus on her family, but stayed on to help transition the department after COVID. Her supervisor, Jennifer Hughes, shared, "Amber is such a valuable member of our team. She works hard every day to support our students, Site Coordinators, and volunteers. We are so lucky to have her!"

  • This morning, we were honored to host a Campus Showcase at Gainesville Intermediate School, and just a few weeks ago, we held another impactful showcase at Gene Pike Middle School. It’s always a privilege to shine a light on our students, staff, and the lasting difference CISNT programs make within the schools and the community. A big thank you to the Gainesville Independent School District and Northwest ISD staff and board members, local business leaders, and community members for attending and supporting our mission! Interested in joining us for our next showcase? Check out upcoming dates and RSVP here: https://lnkd.in/gecNbUtp #AllInForKids #solidfoundationsstrongfutures

  • Julie Redus, Site Coordinator at LHS C. Douglas Killough Campus in Lewisville ISD, shared the following shoutout for this exceptional group of sophomore girls! "I’ve watched them grow tremendously since last year, and I’m continuously impressed by their progress. They are not only kind and intelligent, but also incredibly hardworking and determined to uncover their potential. Each of them has evolved into a young woman who embraces the idea that they can achieve great things—and seeing them take these steps toward self-discovery is deeply rewarding. When we had visitors from the Communities In Schools National Office come to Killough for a tour last month, I immediately knew I could rely on these five remarkable students. I trusted them to lead the tour and showcase everything that makes our campus special. Without hesitation, they stepped up to the challenge, guiding our visitors with confidence and pride, highlighting the programs, culture, and resources that make our school a standout. Watching them in action was such a proud moment for me! Way to go girls!"
