About us

Communities In Schools®(CIS™) is a national organization operating in more than 2,900 schools nationwide that ensures every student – regardless of race, zip code, or socioeconomic background – has what they need to realize their potential in school and beyond. CIS connects students to caring adults and community resources that help them see, confront, and overcome the barriers that stand between them and a brighter future. Communities In Schools of Charlotte-Mecklenburg (CIS-Charlotte) is an affiliate of the national organization, working locally inside 50+ Charlotte-Mecklenburg (CMS) schools. Together, with our CIS affiliates across the country, we are creating a powerful change movement made up of peers, students, and alumni committed to building an equitable path to education for future generations. OUR MISSION is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. WE ENVISION a community where every child and family thrives and is positioned for positive economic mobility. WE BELIEVE that transformative relationships are key to unlocking a student’s potential. We will succeed by including in our strategies, ingraining in our culture, and reflecting in our behaviors, principles and practices of diversity, equity, and inclusion. As a result, we break down immediate and systemic barriers to create and sustain equitable outcomes.

  • Please meet Byron, a CIS-Charlotte graduate who received his high school diploma from Myers Park High School in June - AND his associate’s degree from Central Piedmont Community College! Byron participated in the dual-enrollment program at Myers Park, which allows students to take high school courses while concurrently taking college courses at CPCC at no cost. This is a challenging program but an excellent opportunity for high-achieving students like Byron and those who want to get a head start on their undergraduate degree. “My time at CPCC was both challenging and exciting, and I’m most proud of earning my associate’s degree simultaneously with my high school diploma,” Byron said. “But none of it would have been possible without the support of CIS and my Site Coordinator, Ms. Weinstein. She became a trusted person I could talk to about anything that was on my mind and made me feel seen and supported. CIS not only helped me with my academics, but also provided support in other areas of my life.” Now Byron is continuing his undergraduate degree at North Carolina State University, which he first visited on a campus tour led by CIS. Byron is thriving and in his element, excited to be pursuing projects that bridge technology, the environment/sustainability, and social justice. Read more of Bryon’s inspirational story on our website and his plans to help make the world a better place! 🌍 https://lnkd.in/evzza76g 👉Your donation helps place CIS Site Coordinators in schools to support extraordinary students like Byron. • “The support and resources CIS gave me as a teenager helped me in so many ways. My experience in CIS and the relationships I built with my Site Coordinator and other CIS staff influenced my education and career path. It’s a big part of the reason I’ve chosen to work at CIS and can now give back to the organization and the community that gave so much to me.” - Jewel Jefferies, CIS Alumna and CIS Site Coordinator Jewel Jefferies says CIS had a huge impact on her life as a student at West Charlotte High School, not only helping her to apply and attend college as a first-generation college student, but her experience in CIS influenced her career path as well. Jewel holds a B.A. in Social Work from Fayetteville State University and a master’s degree in Social Work from Johnson C. Smith University - JCSU. Today she is thrilled to be a CIS Site Coordinator at J.H. Gunn Elementary School, with the opportunity to give back to students and the Charlotte community where she was raised. cischarlotte.org/donate #CommunitiesInSchools #CIS #CISAlumni #AllinforKids #WeekofGiving #donate #CISSiteCoordinatorsRock

  • BEING PRESENT MATTERS. CIS knows that good attendance in school is critically important to student success. That’s why we are laser-focused on addressing chronic absenteeism. Brady, a CIS 6th grader, was missing too many days of school. His CIS Site Coordinator, Ms. Randolph, met with him to dig deeper and understand the root cause of his absences. She stressed to Brady the importance of being in school every day, and together they brainstormed ways he could improve his attendance. Ms. Randolph then drew up an “attendance contract” for Brady, holding him accountable by checking in with him each morning when he came to school. Brady’s small successes led to greater enthusiasm - soon he was proactively checking in with Ms. Randolph each day, proud to let her know that he was in school. Over the next semester, his attendance improved tremendously! The real reasons students miss school are often complex and misunderstood, ranging from transportation issues to mental health concerns, food or housing insecurity, or having to work or provide childcare for siblings. Students are often absent because the support and resources to address these challenges are often absent. CIS is present in schools every day, helping students like Brady with their attendance and any other obstacles keeping them from success. 👉With your donations, CIS can place Site Coordinators in schools to address students’ needs and ensure they show up for school, ready to learn! cischarlotte.org/donate #BeingPresentMatters #AttendanceMatters #inschoolseveryday #AllinforKids #WeekofGiving

  • Being present matters! Our Site Coordinators are the heartbeat of CIS, dedicating their time each day in schools to connect with students and parents and provide needed resources. By building strong relationships and understanding each student's unique challenges and dreams, they demonstrate that being present in schools can make all the difference for students. Every student deserves a champion in their corner who advocates for their success in school and in life. 📚❤️ 👉Your support helps place Site Coordinators in schools. https://lnkd.in/e6Pi7AW #CommunitiesInSchools #CIS #BeingPresentMatters #AllinforKids

  • At CIS, we empower students not just for today, but for their future! 🎓✨ Our focus on College and Career Readiness includes support with college exploration and the admissions process, campus tours, career exploration, hands-on workshops, job shadowing, internships, and more. Throughout all of these activities, we include invaluable opportunities for networking with adult professionals and businesses to strengthen students’ social capital connections. Our Site Coordinators are in schools every day to help students unlock their full potential. We believe that when our students’ talents and skills are fully realized, our community becomes stronger and more vibrant, both socially and economically. In June, 600+ CIS seniors graduated from high school, with 89% planning to attend college and 5% joining the military or workforce. Many are first-generation in their family to attend college. Your contributions support our goal to empower students to envision their future and chart their own path to success. • At CIS, we place professional Site Coordinators right where they're needed most—inside schools to connect directly with students and parents. Their mission? To build one-on-one relationships with students, helping them overcome barriers and achieve success inside and outside the classroom. CIS utilizes this ABC+P framework to focus on the following key areas to support students: 🔹 ATTENDANCE: Data-driven strategies and incentives to keep students engaged and ready to learn. 🔹 BEHAVIOR: Skills-building in social-emotional learning, conflict resolution, and self-advocacy. 🔹 COURSEWORK & COLLEGE/CAREER READINESS: Tutoring, mentoring, college tours, and career workshops to ensure academic success. 🔹 PARENT ENGAGEMENT: Strengthening partnerships with families through home visits and personalized check-ins to connect them with community resources. Together, we’re creating a supportive environment where every student can thrive! 💪✨ Learn more at cischarlotte.org/aifk-2024 #BeingPresentMatters #AllInForKids #StudentSupport #ABC+P

  • Good Monday Morning! We are kicking off our ALL IN FOR KIDS: A Week of Giving campaign today, and invite you to follow along with us on social media throughout this week. We will be sharing more about our programs and how CIS is supporting students to thrive and achieve their goals. ☑️🎓 One of the challenges in our schools today is the significant rise in chronic absenteeism in the wake of the pandemic. Last year nearly 15 million students across the U.S. were chronically absent (missing 18+ days of school). The numbers are similar in Charlotte, with more than 1 in 4 students identified as chronically absent. Chronically absent students cannot succeed if they are not in school. The real reasons kids are absent are numerous and often complex and misunderstood. CIS works hand-in-hand with parents, families, and teachers to help connect students to resources they need to address their attendance challenges and other obstacles keeping them from success. When CIS is present in schools, 99% of our students stay in school. 👉Learn more at cischarlotte.org/aifk-2024, and thank you for joining us to be All In For Kids! #communitiesinschools #cis #cischarlotte #AllinforKids #beingpresentmatters #weekofgiving #donate #nonprofit
