  • Congratulations to a Kids First Award Winner for September: Shannon Brown, Lead Patient Care Technician at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. Shannon’s nomination reads: “On 7A, we have a long-term patient on the unit currently, who is typically very quiet. One afternoon, I had the pleasure of seeing Shannon take the time to wash his hair, clean up his room, and find some clothes from our donations to make him feel more like himself. That day he said to me and another nurse, ‘This is much better, I like myself today!’ Prom was the next day; of course, we were all excited and asked him if he would attend. Shannon promised him that she would help him get ready and be his plus one. He lit up, and he had an amazing time that day with Shannon, bringing out a side of him that we had yet to see. I know that these two days made such an impact on him, boosting his confidence and mood!” #KIDSFirstAward

  • #StoriesFromChildrens A childhood experience helped inspire Victor Flinko, BSN, and Matt Kocher, MD, to pursue medicine as a career. The same childhood experience, in fact. As kids, Victor and Dr. Kocher were next-door neighbors at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh as they underwent treatment for leukemia. Years later, they wound up together again at UPMC Children’s — this time, saving others. Their experience as childhood cancer patients guided them both into pediatric medicine. Victor became a surgical nurse at UPMC Children’s, and Dr. Kocher became a pediatric anesthesiologist. “Children’s was somewhere where I always wanted to be just because of my history with the leukemia and all those people that took care of me,” Victor says. “(They were) my role models that I aspired to become.” Today, Victor and Dr. Kocher are key parts of the surgical teams treating some of the sickest patients at UPMC Children’s. “Kids are just a vulnerable population, and I want to make sure that they have a voice or someone to help protect them,” Dr. Kocher says. Part of Autumn’s nomination reads: “Throughout Autumn's time in the cardiovascular operating room and after, she has gone above and beyond all expectations. She continues to show selfless compassion and care to the patients of UPMC Children’s and her colleagues. Autumn has gone out of her way on weekends and after scheduled shifts staying overtime to put our patients first and meet any needs of the patients or the hospital. She truly models UPMC's vision and goals in her actions and the care she provides daily. She continually puts patients at the center of her care and shows great commitment to UPMC Children's Hospital. She has made a positive difference in so many others' lives, both patients and colleagues. Working in an operating room environment, you are working behind the scenes and because of that are often not recognized for the work that you put in daily. We see you Autumn and we appreciate you! Thank you, Autumn!.”
