About us
CLI's mission is closing the gap in reading achievement between children in poverty and their middle-class counterparts. Effective literacy instruction combined with great children's books is the heart and soul of CLI's programs. The majority of children in the classrooms we serve are from economically disadvantaged families with little or no access to books. When we furnish classroom collections (up to 200 children's books) and assist pre-K through 3rd grade teachers in literacy instruction, we work to give these children an essential tool for academic success and an opportunity to develop a life-long love of reading. Headquartered in Philadelphia since our founding in 1988, CLI has been funded by government and private grants as well as many generous individuals. Our clients have included the school districts of Atlanta, Baltimore, Chicago, Newark, and Philadelphia.

We've been a little quiet across our social channels and for good reason! We're excited to thank our sponsors, KnowFully Learning Group, Alera Group (formerly Lighthouse Group), Lakeshore Learning Materials, Bassetts Ice Cream Company, Tootsie Roll Industries's Charm Organic Pops, Equitable Advisors, Walnut Street Theatre, Kimpton Monaco Philadelphia, and Trader Joe's - Arch Street. With their support, we were able to host Literacy Lights the Way and our very first Back to School Bash. Literacy Lights the Way allowed us to reintroduce ourselves to the place where CLI started - Philadelphia. Guests met members of the board, staff, and got to hear stories of impact surrounding the children and educators we serve. On Saturday, we joined our friends at the Kensington Library for a day of fun to celebrate that school's back in session! Children were able to leave with free books, partake in ice cream, pick up some swag from 4imprint, and enjoy lunch from our new friends at T&N Homemade Kitchen. A special thank you to our Literacy Ambassador, Mychal Threets, for sharing his "why" and for delivering wonderful read alouds of Jamilah Thompkins-Bigelow's "Your Name is a Song".

Philadelphia is bringing back its school libraries and investing in the future of education and youth literacy — including bringing on Jean Darnell as The School District of Philadelphia Library Chief. Darnell is an accomplished librarian and literacy professional, with a rich history in investing in young readers and libraries at large. Since becoming a school librarian in 2013, she has made a commitment to helping children access the books and spaces that connect them with success. In Philadelphia, she hopes to help rebuild the current state of school libraries, which are struggling or nonexistent in most schools, and bring back school librarians wherever possible. Learn more about Darnell, her inspirational story, and her mission in the article below. #Libraries #SchoolLibraries #PhiladelphiaSchools #PhiladelphiaReads Jean D.
