Welcome to Child & Family, where we strengthen families, their members and the communities in which they live. At Child & Family, we hold two core beliefs. That individuals and communities thrive when supported by strong families and that a community works best when it accepts responsibility for all of its members. These beliefs influence everything we do and have guided our growth since we first opened our doors in 1866. Over the last 150 years, Child & Family has become the largest and most comprehensive social service provider in Newport County and one of the largest in the State of Rhode Island. It is a center for community involvement – a place where people come together to give help, to receive help and to support the work of others. With state-of-the-art Community Centers in both Middletown and Providence, and our strategic plan in place, we have adopted 3 key pathways: Family Preservation, Best Practices and Leadership. Child & Family provides important services and programs to thousands of children, teens, families and elders throughout Rhode Island each year. VISION STATEMENT: Empowered, engaged community members who thrive. MISSION STATEMENT : To strengthen individuals, families and the communities in which they live by identifying needs and utilizing best practices. Type of Organization Private, 501(c)(3) non-profit provider of social services Accreditation/Memberships • Council on Accreditation of Services for Families and Children • The Alliance for Children and Families

We were delighted to meet with you Family Psychology Mutual CIC
Our Functional Family Therapy Extra Familial Harm Teams in London held an informal Zoom call with a more established team in Providence, Rhode Island, USA. We are grateful to our FFT Consultant Wendell Covell who provides consultation to both services for making this link for us. It is always fascinating to learn about how an evidence-based methodology adapts to the unique setting and context in which it is placed. Despite being the smallest state, Rhode Island experiences significant gang related activity and entrenched poverty along with a myriad of social problems. The Rhode Island Team was full of positivity and had lots to share. The team work hard at community outreach so that they are able to become known in the communities that they serve, using novel approaches to gain community trust such as turning up at local basketball courts with food and music to see who comes to engage with them. Supporting young people to get involved in positive activities that match their interests. Keeping in touch with and responding to community concerns and incidents quickly. Developing close relationships with the Courts, Police and Probation so that they understand what the team delivers. Whilst there are many differences between us across the Atlantic there are many common issues that we can learn from. We heard about how the team seek to develop situational decision-making skills so as to enable young people to avoid involvement with people who may be leading them into trouble. How to teach refusal skills but in a way that avoids being made to look weak or lame in front of others. How to work with children and young people who may be in a greater position of power than their parent. All of these skills sit within the FFT model of change, which means that a systemic relational focus is maintained, and parents are involved in all the skills that are practised. This kind of international connection enables us to reflect on our universal values and the desire to strive for better outcomes for children and families. The respect and humanity that shines through the practice and dedication of the Rhode Island Team is to their great credit. There is a clear ring of truth that good clinical practice travels well and we will hope to share our skills and experience in return as our teams continue to develop. #functionalfamilytherapy #fft #internationalconnections #bestpractice #sharingbestpractice #goodpractice #commonpractice
