Congratulations to the winners of the Chicago Architecture Center's Missing Middle Infill Housing design competition! ParkFowler Plus (6-flat), Dirk Denison Architects (3-flat), Future Firm (rowhouse), and Vladimir Radutny (single-family). These four Chicago-based firms led with great innovation in reimagining contemporary models for infill housing types that can all be readily built in our neighborhoods. An additional 28 inspired entries complete our new Design Catalog. Once upon a time, Chicago built tremendous amounts of housing for working families in the form of Greystones, courtyard buildings, and our famed Bungalow belts. Today, this naturally affordable "missing middle-density" housing eludes many Chicagoans, with gentrification and demolition resulting in a net loss of this essential housing stock. The CAC's juried design competition asked architects to produce smart, workable visions for “missing middle” housing, in conjunction with local government's efforts to incentivize new supply. We encourage everyone—concerned citizens, design professionals, and prospective developers—to seek inspiration in our Design Catalog: https://lnkd.in/gHimWafc To learn more or get connected to the architects, please write our team at [email protected]. Title your email “Missing Middle Housing.” And thank you to our esteemed jury! If you were to name iconic structures in Chicago, Cloud Gate (aka "The Bean") would likely be on your list. But while you may know of the art piece, do you know who built it? See Ironworkers Union Local 63, the local union that trains and represents skilled architectural and ornamental ironworkers. A new CAC partner, Local 63 shares our commitment to deepening appreciation for the forward-facing and behind-the-scenes work that shapes our city, as well as empowering young people to explore the construction industry. We are grateful to Local 63 for their investment in the future of Chicago’s architecture!

Work has begun to convert the former Charles Warrington Earle School in West Englewood to affordable housing for 50 families and individuals. There will also be social services available to residents from a non-profit aiming to end generational homelessness. The historic CPS school building is one of 50 closed across Chicago by the Emanuel Administration in 2013, six in the Greater Englewood community alone. A decade later, only a few properties have found viable new uses. As the city's Housing Commissioner Lissette Castañeda said to Block Club, repurposing the former elementary school “allows us to correct a historic wrong.” Local minority-owned Burling Builders, Inc. will lead construction, and Englewood-based architecture and planning firm Beehyyve is serving as lead architect. The project is slated to open in December 2025. Read on for more details and a round-up of several exciting community-based investments taking hold in Englewood: https://bit.ly/4eBkRDV 📸: Gorman & Company #AffordableHousing #Schools #Englewood #AdaptiveReuse

We're debuting a new Chicago Architecture Center video series, Design Matters! For our first episode, CAC President & CEO Eleanor Esser Gorski met with architect John Ronan of John Ronan Architects to learn about the stunning new Chicago Park District headquarters building in Brighton Park. The video explores how thoughtful design enhances daily life. Learn about the influence of Olmsted's park & boulevard system on the form and setting of this new civic space, and how bricks, fallen ash trees, courtyards, and metal screens each play a unique role in defining the building. Check it out! https://lnkd.in/g7HJTpEy #Chicago #BrightonPark #architecture #DesignMatters

On December 10, CAC is thrilled to host photographer Sandra Steinbrecher and a panel of friends and collaborators on her new book, "The Salt Shed: The Transformation of a Chicago Landmark." A recent Chicago Tribune article provides a good introduction to Sandra's work, on the occasion of the book's launch: https://bit.ly/3XXeiFW The book is an intimate portrait of the 2-year-plus adaptive reuse project to forge a stunning new entertainment venue from Morton's old salt storage facility. Sandra was granted special permission to embed herself with workers throughout the construction phases, to create this one-of-a-kind photo document. Our panel discussion will delve into the Salt Shed's history and redevelopment, grounded in stories of the workers who made it all happen. Purchase the book at the CAC Design Store or online at shop.architecture.org. Learn more and reserve your FREE tickets! https://lnkd.in/gqt4rUic 📸: Sandra Steinbrecher #SaltShed #preservation #AdaptiveReuse #photography

We're excited to welcome two new members of the CAC Board of Trustees! Both new trustees bring a wealth of knowledge and professional connections that will serve CAC well over their board term, supporting all that we offer culturally and educationally and our mission to inspire people to discover why design matters. Stacey Kern, Partner at Eversheds Sutherland, earned her A.B. and an M.A. (in Slavic languages) at Duke University after which she earned her J.D. at Cornell University. She began her career at McDermott Will & Emery and has done stints at Kirkland & Ellis, DLA Piper, Baker & McKenzie, Paul Hastings, Greenberg Traurig and now Eversheds Sutherland where she is a partner. She is a member of Eversheds Global Board of Directors and the U.S. Executive Committee. Gary Axelrod, Global Co-Chair of Hospitality, Gaming & Leisure Industry at Latham & Watkins LLP, advises clients on many of their most complex and highest-profile real estate transactions and is nationally recognized as a leading transactional lawyer in both the real estate and hospitality industries. Gary also supports community causes by serving as a board member for the Anti-Defamation League, Midwest and assisting clients on a pro bono basis. Also, a big thank you to retiring Trustee Theodore Yi for his contributions and leadership during his time on the board.

On Friday, CAC welcomed design leads on the O'Hare Satellite Concourse One expansion project for an informative and entertaining discussion. The audience was treated to a deep dive into design thinking for airports. Many thanks to Related Midwest's Ann Thompson for moderating, and to Ryan Culligan, AIA of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), Juan Moreno of Juan Gabriel Moreno Architects (JGMA), and Barrett Peterson, RA, LEED AP of Ross Barney Architects for sharing their particular insights on the concourse design process & inspiration. We also learned how the new facility will improve the user experience at O'Hare, together with future phases of the multi-billion-dollar O'Hare 21 Terminal Area Plan. This is one project that demands our attention for its lasting impact on the region's economy. 📸: Francisco Lopez de Arenosa © SOM #ORD #OHare #OHare21 #airports #infrastructure #architecture
