Chess in the Schools

Hey, 2024-2025 school year, we are ready for YOU! Chess in the Schools instructors will be in over 50 NYC public schools where a vast majority of students come from low-income households. (On average 82% of our students qualify for Title I funding.) They will each teach over 30 lessons across 30 weeks of the year to between 500-650 students, run after school clubs, and most will also coach their students in 20-25 of our free scholastic tournaments. “Dedicated” is an understatement for this team! #backtoschool #chesseducation #scholasticchess #k12 #teachers

We are thrilled to see these "Faces of US Chess" on the US Chess website! Read how our current board member Andrew Lerner shares a beautiful tribute to his father, Burt. Burt Lerner was a key board member of ours in the mid-1980s. It was at this time that we transitioned from being the American Chess Foundation to become focused on youth in NYC from low-income backgrounds and become known as Chess in the Schools. The Lerner family values, not only the game, but the mentorship of those who teach it.
