Building a better future for everyone.
About us
The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative was founded in 2015 to help solve some of society’s toughest challenges — from eradicating disease and improving education, to addressing the needs of our communities. Through collaboration, providing resources and building technology, our mission is to help build a more inclusive, just and healthy future for everyone. We engage directly in the communities we serve because no one understands how to address our society’s challenges better than those who live them everyday. These partners help us identify problems and opportunities, learn fast and iterate toward our audacious goals for the next century. We strive to be humble, empathetic and life-long learners who work collaboratively to develop community-centered solutions. To help build a more just, equitable future, we embrace people from all backgrounds and experiences, who challenge each other’s assumptions with fresh perspectives. To that end, we are co-creating an environment where everyone feels respected, valued and we celebrate the beauty in the diversity of our shared strength. What would you study if the sky was the limit? We’re collaborating with Columbia University, The Rockefeller University and Yale University on cutting-edge immune cell research at our New York Biohub. Our mission? To engineer immune cells that could detect diseases like cancer and Alzheimer’s earlier. We’re excited to share this journey with a community of innovators dedicated to advancing science. #science #engineering #collaboration #healthresearch #inflammation #CZBiohubNY

Exciting news! 🎉 Our Rare As One community has expanded to include international patient-led organizations. “We’ve spent five years growing with the Rare as One network, and now it’s time to scale up to support international organizations,” shared CZI Lead for the Rare As One Network Heidi Bjornson-Pennell. From Serbia to the UK, these groups are bringing important ideas and perspectives to address the global burden of rare diseases. “People all around the world are impacted by rare diseases, but there is a lack of awareness, funding and fundamental infrastructure to support rare disease research and care.” The expansion of the RAO Network will promote collaboration across borders and strengthen patient-driven efforts to address rare diseases worldwide. #RareDisease #RareDiseaseAwareness #RareAsOne #Funding #Collaboration

Meet Utz Ermel from the Imaging Institute. He’s using a VR headset to annotate detailed 3D images of the inner contents of human cells. These annotations provide critical insights for other scientists to accelerate collaboration in understanding cell biology in health and disease. The Imaging Institute is committed to advancing cellular research by making it more accessible and efficient. Their new CryoET Portal enables researchers to upload, access and use detailed 3D images of cells, empowering the scientific community to tackle complex challenges, such as unraveling the intricacies of health and disease. The portal also offers comprehensive tools and resources, making it accessible to both seasoned researchers and those new to this cutting-edge field. #OpenScienceWeek #OpenScience #CryoET #CellBiology #Imaging

💖 We believe that collaboration is at the heart of innovation. The Rare Genomes Project, in partnership with patient-led organizations, is using cutting-edge genomic tools like GeniE to estimate disease prevalence and drive forward research that truly makes a difference. The journey to diagnosing a rare disease is often long and filled with uncertainty. But with tools like GeniE we're shortening that road. By making genetic prevalence data more accessible, GeniE is empowering researchers and patient communities alike to advance our understanding and treatment of rare diseases. #Genomics #HealthTech #RareDisease #Collaboration #RareAsOne

Not to brag, but Aparna said it best! This job is pretty cool. "I get to study the human brain, the most beautiful structure ever created by biology." Along with Kathrin Plath and Heather Christofk, Aparna Bhaduri is researching how cells in the developing brain use energy and how they are impacted by a parent’s hyperglycemia. High blood sugar during pregnancy is linked to neurodevelopmental disorders, and this project could get us closer to understanding how to support brain development. #pregnancy #biology #science #CellBiology #research
