Today is International Overdose Awareness Day, a campaign that raises awareness of overdose—one of the world’s worst public health crises—and stimulates action and discussion about evidence-based overdose prevention and drug policy. The campaign also acknowledges the profound grief felt by families and friends whose loved ones have died or suffered permanent injury from a drug overdose and spreads the message about the tragedy of drug overdose death and that drug overdose is preventable. According to the Columbus and Franklin County Addiction Plan: ⬩Overdose deaths in Franklin County decreased 8.2% in 2023 but remain much higher than before the COVID-19 pandemic ⬩85% of overdose deaths were due to Opiates and Fentanyl. Heroin remained absent ⬩73% of Franklin County overdose deaths were men ⬩White people remain more likely to die of an overdose than people of color (61% to 39%), but that's slowly starting to change ⬩Almost half the 696 people who died of an overdose in 2023 in Franklin County were age 35 to 54 To learn about the work of central Ohio hospitals to combat the overdose crisis, visit https://loom.ly/EHEIAeU. Labor Day is a time to celebrate the hard work of Americans everywhere—but it’s also a time to stay safe. In Franklin County, the number of deaths caused by impaired driving nearly doubled over a three-year period. If you’ve been drinking, plan ahead—use a taxi, rideshare, or call a sober friend. #CentralOhioHospitalCouncil #COHC #BetterTogether #PreventImpairedDriving #SoberDriver #CelebrateResponsibly #LaborDay #DriveSober #DriveSoberOrGetPulledOver #RideSober #RideSoberOrGetPulledOver #ResponsibleDriving #LaborDayWeekend

On this day in 1920, the 19th Amendment was certified, granting women the right to vote across the nation—a milestone in the journey toward equality. Today, as we observe Women’s Equality Day, COHC honors the achievements of women’s rights activists whose relentless efforts paved the way for future generations. We also celebrate the ongoing work of those who continue to champion gender equality. In alignment with this commitment, central Ohio hospitals are actively working to enhance support for women- and minority-owned businesses. By implementing a range of targeted initiatives, we aim to help these businesses better understand the unique needs of each hospital system and navigate the complexities of the hospital contracting process. Central Ohio hospitals are committed to combating the opiate crisis in our community. In the first half of 2024, our hospitals distributed 3,667 Narcan kits to individuals at risk of an opiate overdose. This is part of our broader collaboration with the Columbus and Franklin County Opiate Action Plan, aimed at reducing addiction and preventing overdose deaths. Franklin County residents can request a free Narcan kit by visiting the following websites: https://loom.ly/QKUSCqI or https://loom.ly/JpoFYrQ Our hospitals are also working to reduce the amount of opiates prescribed for certain medical procedures and working to educate Franklin County residents on the impacts of addiction at community forums.
