Transforming the Way the World Travels

About us

The Center for Responsible Travel (CREST) is a globally recognized nonprofit organization dedicated to transforming the way the world travels. Based in Washington, DC but with an international scope, CREST provides solutions, resources, and support to governments, policymakers, tourism businesses, and nonprofit organizations to confront tourism’s most pressing issues. Founded in the wake of the UN’s International Year of Ecotourism, CREST initially focused on the role of small-scale ecotourism in empowering communities and conserving precious resources. Over time, our work has evolved to consider how all tourism can be more responsibly planned, developed, and managed across all sectors and geographies. Through innovative field projects, research, consultancies, and advocacy, CREST is taking action to address our world’s key threats to securing a sustainable future.

"All the misunderstandings that people have about the safari industry stand uncorrectable because large, foreign-owned companies control the narrative about us and our own country... Now it’s our time to tell our own story." 🎥 In 2022, panelist Rachel Levy began producing Hidden in Plain Sight, a groundbreaking film that exposes the economic leakage and exploitation within Tanzania's safari industry. Only about 15% of safari companies throughout Africa are under Black ownership, while the labor force across the continent is over 90% Black. The result: economic leakage of profits so large that the UN estimates that for every $100 (USD) a tourist spends on a vacation, only $5 remains in the country. This award-winning film has been showcased at prestigious venues like Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University, amplifying voices that have long been silenced. By centering the narratives of Tanzanian guides and operators, the film reclaims the story for those who live and work in these communities. 🔗 Join us at the 2024 World Tourism Day Forum to hear more from Rachel on Authentic Storytelling for Just and Equitable Travel!
