Just as Jane Jacobs is globally recognized for her important achievements, we recognize that there is a ‘Jane Jacobs’ in every country, city, village, or tribe. These women have left an indelible mark on people’s lives, shaping the way their communities interact with their surroundings. Rajaa Bannout (1957-2022), founder of the Haneen Cultural Forum in Gaziantep and founder of the Haneen Choir Network. At the height of the refugee crisis, Gaziantep was the most densely populated region for those fleeing from Syria. This is where Rajaa created a space for social, educational and psychosocial support. It included a women’s singing group consisting of members from across Syria singing in Arabic, Kurdish, Syriac, Turkmen, Armenian, Circassian and Assyrian. The initiative helped women to emerge from the state of trauma, loss and dispersion by providing an avenue for personal healing. It also gave a voice to their desire for peace and coexistence, affirmed their belonging to an inclusive Syrian national identity and helped facilitate integration within the host community. At first, the creation of a choir in such a time of deep loss and crisis seemed to many as crazy or inappropriate. Yet the power of the arts and of music and song in particular during times of human tragedy is such that today the Choir grew beyond its original seed and is in its ninth consecutive year. Beyond being a space for self-expression and personal healing, the Choir has become a community where members provide each other with social support as they navigate the shifting challenges of their status within host communities.  Officially registered in Berlin in 2016, it currently includes 175 women, distributed into 11 groups across 6 countries of the Syrian diaspora. The Choir continues to be an invitation for solidarity and unity no matter what the circumstances and crises may be. رجاء بنوت (1957 – 2022) مؤسسة ملتقى حنين الثقافي في مدينة غازي عنتاب ومؤسسة شبكة كورال حنين. في أوج أزمة اللجوء وفي مدينة غازي عنتاب وهي أكثر المناطق التركية اكتظاظاً بالهاربين من سورية، أسست رجاء ملتقى حنين الثقافي كمكاناً يقدم خدمات اجتماعية وتثقيفية والدعم النفسي والاجتماعي. شكلت رجاء مجموعة غنائية نسائية لغناء مقاطع من التراث السوري باللغات العربية والكردية والسريانية والتركمانية والأرمنية والشركسية والآشورية.  شكل كورال حنين صوت للذاكرة الشعبية، يذكر بمحنة اللاجئات المغتربات قسراً، ويعلن عن رغبتهن في السلام والتعايش. ساعد المشروع النساء السوريات على الخروج من حالة الصدمة والتشتت، وابراز قدرتهن على خلق تواصل ثقافي والتأكيد على الانتماء للهوية الوطنبة السورية الجامعة وتسهيل الاندماج مع المجتمع المضيف. بدى للكثيرين فكرة الغناء في مثل هذا الوقت من الفقد العميق فكرة مجنونة أو غير لائقة. ولكن سرعان ما أثبت الكورال قدرة الفن والموسيقى والغناء على تجاوز الصعاب في أوقات الحروب والماّسي الإنسانية. بالتالي أصبحت البذرة الصغيرة التي زرعتها رجاء تكبر شيئا فشيئا حتى أصبحت اليوم في عامها التاسع. إلى جانب كونها مساحة للتعبير عن الذات ومعالجة الصدمة، أصبح الكورال مجتمعًا يقدم فيه العضوات الدعم لبعضهن البعض خاصة وهن يحاولن التعامل مع التحديات ووضعهن المتقلب والغير مستقر داخل المجتمعات المضيفة. تم التسجيل الرسمي في برلين عام 2016 واليوم يضم 175 امرأة في 11 مجموعة عبر 6 دول للمغتربين السوريين. ويبقى الملتقى دعوة للوحدة والترابط والتئازر بين أعضاء المجتمع الواحد مهما كانت الظروف والصعاب.

Azza Kamel is the founder of Alwan wa Awtar NGO (A&A), an organization working closely with underprivileged children and youth since 2005 to develop their skills using experiential learning and art as a tool for social development. From Mokattam where it first began its activities to Kafr Hamza and Ezbet El Nasr, the communities where A&A operates lack access to communal spaces and quality educational services, with public schools being over-crowded, exam-driven, with minimal activities that support individual growth. A&A provides safe and inclusive spaces where each participant is supported in their learning journey to grow in their ability of making choices that are both rooted in a personal vision and responsive to their reality and context. The ultimate aim is to enrich their social and cultural wellbeing and awaken them to their full potential as genuine, well-rounded individuals who actively contribute to the development of themselves and their communities. Over the course of its operations, A&A has met several challenges including lack of steady funding, but has also experienced the support of the community - and parents in particular - during difficult times. Graduates of A&A programmes regularly volunteer to support younger peers which is a testament to their belief in the added value that the organization provides. Many have also become involved in development work in a professional capacity being engaged in other national and international NGOs thereby spreading the A&A approach and ethos to all the communities that they serve. عزة كامل هي مؤسسة جمعية ألوان وأوتار وهي منظمة تعمل بشكل وثيق مع الأطفال والشباب المحرومين لتطوير مهاراتهم من خلال التعلم التجريبي وباستخدام الفن كأداة للتنمية الاجتماعية. تفتقر المجتمعات التي تعمل بها الجمعية ومنها المقطم حيث بدأت أنشطتها منذ عام 2005 وكفر حمزة وعزبة النصر حيث توسعت لاحقاْ، إلى المساحات المجتمعية والخدمات التعليمية الجيدة، حيث تكون المدارس العامة مكتظة، ولا يتوفر فيها الحد الأدنى من الأنشطة التي تدعم تنمية المهارات الفردية. توفر ألوان وأوتار مساحات تعليمية آمنة حيث يتم دعم كل مشارك والتعامل معه على أنه في رحلة تعلم خاصة به ينمي من خلالها قدرته على اتخاذ قرارات حياتية و يكون لنفسه رؤية شخصية تدفعه إلى الأمام وتتسق مع واقعه وسياقه. تغطي برامج ألوان وأوتار المهارات الرئيسية التي يحتاجها أي فرد لتحقيق إمكانياته وتحسين آفاقه المستقبلية وقابليته للتوظيف. بالتالي يتمثل هدف الجمعية النهائي في الارتقاء بالرفاهية الاجتماعية والثقافية وتوعية الأطفال والشباب إلى إمكاناتهم كأفراد متكاملين يساهمون في تنمية أنفسهم ومجتمعاتهم. واجهت  ألوان وأوتار العديد من التحديات بما فيها عدم الاستقرار التمويلي، كما شهدت أيضًا دعماْ ومساندة غير مسبوقة من المجتمع وأسر المشاركين على وجه الخصوص وذلك خلال الأزمات. يتطوع خريجو برامج الجمعية بانتظام لدعم أقرانهم الأصغر سنًا كما وذلك اقتناعا منهم بالجمعية ورسالتها. أصبح العديد منهم منخرطين في العمل في مجال التنمية بصفة مهنية و بالتالي نجد أنه تم تعيينهم في منظمات غير حكومية دولية وغير دولية وبالتالي فقد أصبحوا يساهمون في نشر رسالة ألوان وأوتار إلى مجتمعات أخرى.

Rasha Emad eldin is an urban planner and co-founder of BENAA Foundation, an organization whose mission is to empower rural communities through youth-led participatory projects. BENAA’s methodology is based on the transfer of knowledge on sustainable development, training youth and enhancing their capacity to implement participatory development projects for and with local communities. BENAA works hand in hand with stakeholders in designing solutions to address a problem or meet a pressing need. This includes consultations, incorporating feedback and implementing trials to test different solutions and materials with the full involvement of the community. Youth then work together to implement the project alongside community members. Using this approach, BENAA supported families in Ezbet Ishaq in Fayoum in building an environmental classroom, thereby addressing their challenge with providing education to their children.  It is worth noting that Fayoum Governorate has the second highest illiteracy rate and also has high school drop out rates. The village’s children had to travel a long distance to reach the nearest school, having to walk 2 kilometers daily on fast and dangerous roads. The environmental classroom is an educational and community space, built from local, natural, and recycled materials with the help of the community using 9,000 recycled plastic bottles and local materials such as desert clay and bamboo. To date, BENAA has implemented over 20 similar projects across Egypt, including water, sanitation and hygiene, solid waste management and urban and rural sustainable architecture solutions. رشا عماد الدين هي مخططة عمرانية ومؤسس مشارك لمؤسسة بناء، وهي منظمة تهدف إلى تمكين المجتمعات الريفية من خلال مشاريع تشاركية يقودها الشباب. تعتمد منهجية بناء على نقل المعرفة حول التنمية المستدامة وتدريب الشباب وتعزيز قدرتهم على تنفيذ مشاريع التنمية التشاركية لصالح المجتمعات المحلية وبالعمل الوثيق معها. تعمل بناء جنبًا إلى جنب مع أصحاب المصلحة في المجتمع في تصميم حلول لمعالجة مشكلة أو تلبية احتياج ملح. يتضمن ذلك المشاورات ودمج الملاحظات وتنفيذ تجربة أو نموذج أولي لاختبار حلول ومواد مختلفة بمشاركة كاملة من المجتمع. ثم يعمل الشباب معًا لتنفيذ المشروع جنبًا إلى جنب مع أفراد المجتمع. باستخدام هذا النهج، دعمت بناء الأسر في عزبة إسحاق في الفيوم في بناء فصل دراسي بيئي، وبالتالي معالجة التحدي الذي كانوا يواجهونه في توفير فرص لتعليم أطفالهم. والجدير بالذكر أن محافظة الفيوم هي ثاني أعلى محافظة من حيث معدلات الأمية ولديها أيضًا معدلات عالية من التسرب من المدارس. كان على أطفال القرية أن يقطعوا مسافة طويلة للوصول إلى أقرب مدرسة، حيث كان عليهم السير لمسافة 2 كيلومتر يوميًا على طرق سريعة وخطرة. الفصل البيئي هو مساحة تعليمية ومجتمعية، تم بناؤها من مواد محلية وطبيعية ومعاد تدويرها بمساعدة المجتمع باستخدام 9000 زجاجة بلاستيكية معاد تدويرها ومواد محلية مثل الطفلة الصحراوية والبامبو. ولقد نجحت مؤسسة بناء حتى الآن في تنفيذ 20 مشروع في قطاعات المياه و الصرف الصحي و ادارة المخلفات حلول الهندسة المعمارية المستدامة في المناطق الحضرية والريفية.

Nisreen Al-Araj is a regional advisor on sustainable urban development supporting Arab municipalities to manage cities and improve the lives of citizens, with focus on urban resilience, sustainability and engagement of local communities in decision-making. In her previous capacity as an advisor to the Mayor of Amman, she contributed to developing the Amman urban observatory and introduced the concept of urban resilience, resulting in the Amman Resilience Strategy. She also played a major role in developing the city’s first climate action plan by leading the sustainable development team.  It is worth noting that Amman suffers from a number of challenges, such as urban sprawl, large increase in population, pressure on services and infrastructure, traffic congestion and water shortages. In 2014, Nisreen introduced the concept of urban resilience by applying for a global competition for cities committed to developing and implementing resilience plans. The Amman Resilience Strategy resulted in the implementation of several follow-up projects and partnerships and improved access to finance for essential infrastructure projects that will improve the quality of lives of citizens and support community cohesion and resource sustainability. One example is a partnership to establish a youth center and a psychological treatment venue for women victims of violence in a neighbourhood hosting a large number of refugees and low-income families. Throughout her work, she utilized and advocated for the use of participatory and inclusive community approaches in projects and decision making.   نسرين الأعرج مستشارة إقليمية في التنمية الحضرية المستدامة، تعمل على دعم البلديات العربية ورفع قدراتها لتتمكن من ادارة المدن وتحسين حياة السكان مع التركيز على المنعة الحضرية، الاستدامة واشراك المجتمعات المحلية في صنع القرار. وقد عملت سابقا كمستشارة لأمين عمان حيث ساهمت في تحسين العمل البلدي من خلال تطوير المرصد الحضري في المدينة وادخال مفهوم المنعة الحضرية والتي نتج عنها استراتيجية منعة عمان، كما لعبت دورا رئيسيا في تطوير أول خطة عمل مناخية للمدينة من خلال قيادة فريق التنمية المستدامة. والجدير بالذكر أن مدينة عمان تعاني من تحديات من أهمها التمدد الحضري ، الزيادة الكبيرة في عدد السكان، الضغط على الخدمات والبنية التحتية، الازدحامات المرورية ونقص المياه. في عام 2014 قامت نسرين بالعمل على ادخال مفهوم المنعة الحضرية ضمن سياق عمل الأمانة من خلال التقدم لمسابقة عالمية لاختيار المدن الملتزمة بتطوير وتنفيذ خطط المنعة. ونتج عن استراتيجية منعة عمان تنفيذ عدة مشاريع وشراكات تدعم صمود المدينة و التماسك المجتمعي، وسهلت الوصول الى المزيد من تمويل مشاريع البنية التحتية الضرورية لتحسين نوعية حياة السكان، ومن الأمثلة على ذلك الشراكة لإنشاء مركز للشباب ومكان للعلاج النفسي للنساء ضحايا العنف في حي يستضيف عددا كبيرا من اللاجئين والأسر ذات الدخل المنخفض. وقد اكدت خلال عملها الدؤوب على استخدام وتعزيز النهج التشاركي للمجتمع المحلي في المشاريع وفي صنع القرار.

Evelyne Porret (1939 – 2021) is a Swiss potter who chose the village of Tunis in Fayoum as her home and who made it her life mission to support the community there. An extremely disadvantaged village, education levels were markedly low as children were expected to support their families to bring in income and girls’ education in particular was frowned upon. Evelyne and her partner Michel Pastore established the Ptah Association for training Urban and Rural Children in Ceramic Works in 1984. The school taught children and locals how to make a living through pottery skills, using techniques similar to those that Islamic ceramics brought in its time to a high degree of know-how before disappearing. Growing little by little and with hardly any external support, Michel and Evelyne would help community members sell their work, sometimes taking it abroad with them when they put on their own exhibitions. Today, Tunis village has become an important tourist attraction. There are over 50 workshops owned by the community, including women. These workshops engage younger members and continue to produce and sell in both local and international markets. @Maria Pastore https://lnkd.in/d8nKrwj4 إيفلين بوريه (1939 - 2021) هي صانعة فخار سويسرية اختارت قرية تونس في الفيوم لتكون موطنها وجعلت من دعم المجتمع هناك مهمة حياتها. كانت القرية محرومة للغاية، وكانت مستويات التعليم منخفضة بشكل ملحوظ حيث كان من المتوقع أن يدعم الأطفال أسرهم لجلب الدخل وكان هناك عدم تقبل لتعليم الفتيات على وجه الخصوص. أسست إيفلين وشريكها ميشيل باستوري جمعية بتاح لتدريب أطفال المناطق الحضرية والريفية على أعمال الخزف في عام 1984. علمت المدرسة الأطفال والسكان المحليين كيفية كسب لقمة العيش من خلال مهارات الفخار، باستخدام تقنيات مماثلة لتلك التي جلبها الخزف الإسلامي في وقته إلى درجة عالية من المعرفة قبل أن يختفي. مع النمو شيئًا فشيئًا وبدون أي دعم خارجي يذكر، ساعد ميشيل وإيفلين أعضاء المجتمع على بيع أعمالهم، وأحيانًا يأخذونها معهم إلى الخارج عندما يقيمون معارضهم الخاصة. اليوم، أصبحت قرية تونس منطقة جذب سياحي مهمة. يوجد أكثر من 50 ورشة عمل مملوكة للمجتمع، بما في ذلك النساء. وتعمل هذه الورش على إشراك الأعضاء الأصغر سناً وتواصل الإنتاج والبيع في الأسواق المحلية والدولية.

Dr. Mona Zakaria is an architect and historian specialized in heritage and rehabilitation. She has worked with communities as varied as those in Historic Cairo such as Kal’at Al Kabsh, Darb El-Labbana, the Fustat Pottery Village to Nazlet El-Seman in close proximity to the Pyramids in Giza to Aswan’s Market and Handicrafts Center, and the informal area of El-Assal in Shoubra, Cairo. This is in addition to her role as architectural designer and to her broad academic roles including Professor of Islamic Architectural History at the School of Architecture and Urbanism of Versailles; Researcher at the Centre d’Études et de Documentation Économiques among others. Dr. Mona was nominated for the “Aga Khan Prize” in 2003, won the “ArchVision Competition” as one of the best 20 architects in the world for the total of projects in 2012, honored by the Egyptian Ministry of Culture in 2022. Dr. Mona’s approach puts the community at the center. She closely engages with them and is impacted by the knowledge and learning that they share. After encountering initial resistance, she is quickly integrated within the community as she gains community trust. The El-Assal project was particularly challenging. As the first touch point for those migrating from rural areas to the capital, it is an area with precarious living conditions and rife with multiple social and economic challenges. The work involved restoring houses and creating job opportunities for the residents, which led to a significant change in their lives. As with the majority of her projects in Historic Cairo and other areas, she sided with the community and their own terms and definition of development. الدكتورة منى زكريا هي معمارية ومؤرخة متخصصة في التراث وإعادة التأهيل، عملت مع مجتمعات متنوعة مثل تلك الموجودة في القاهرة التاريخية مثل قلعة الكبش ودرب اللبانة وقرية الفخار في الفسطاط و كذلك عملت في نزلة السمان في الجيزة وفي سوق أسوان ومركز الحرف اليدوية ومنطقة العسال في شبرا، القاهرة. هذا بالإضافة إلى دورها كمصممة معمارية وأدوارها الأكاديمية الواسعة بما في ذلك أستاذة تاريخ العمارة الإسلامية في كلية العمارة والعمران في فرساي؛ باحثة في مركز الدراسات والتوثيق الاقتصادي وغيرها. تم ترشيح الدكتورة منى لجائزة "الآغا خان" في عام 2003، وفازت بمسابقة "ArchVision" كواحدة من أفضل 20 معماريًا في العالم لإجمالي المشاريع في عام 2012، وتم تكريمها من قبل وزارة الثقافة المصرية في عام 2022. تعمل الدكتورة منى عن قرب بالمجتمعات حيث تضع احتياجاتهم في الأولوية وتتأثر بالمعرفة والتعلم الذي يتقاسمونه مما يسمح لها أن تندمج بسرعة داخل المجتمع. كان مشروع "العسال" تحديًا خاصًا بصفة هذه المنقطة نقطة الاتصال الأولى لأولئك الذين يهاجرون من المناطق الريفية إلى العاصمة. و بالتالي فهي منطقة لا تعاني من ظروف معيشية محفوفة بالمخاطر فحسب، بل إنها مليئة أيضًا بالعديد من التحديات الاجتماعية والاقتصادية. تضمن العمل ترميم المنازل وخلق فرص عمل للسكان، مما أدى إلى تغيير كبير في حياتهم. وكما هو الحال مع غالبية مشاريعها الأخرى، انحازت إلى المجتمع وشروطه وتعريفه للتنمية و الذي لا يتوافق دائما مع التعريفات الأخرى.

Dr. Laila Iskandar Kamel, former Minister of State for Environmental Affairs and former Minister of State for Urban Renewal and Informal Settlements in Egypt, is a leading member of civil society working with women and children in deprived urban and rural settings. She has been continuously engaged in improving the lives of informal waste collectors (Zabaleen) in Cairo since 1983. Community members collect waste daily, assisted in the past by donkey carts, with children being central to the process. Waste is then sorted manually by women and children. When Dr. Laila began to support the community, homes were mostly cardboard shacks, the closest source of water was 5 kilometers away and there was no sewage system. Dr. Laila’s first interventions were in education where she created a 2-classroom informal school whose teachers were recruited and trained from the community. In 1987 she helped create a recycling school for girls through private donations. The Association for the Protection of the Environment is today a social enterprise run by 12 women recyclers and supported by highly skilled volunteers. Over 1,500 girls and women have been trained and there are currently 300 regular home-based producers receiving a regular income from sales within Egypt and abroad. Today, the makeshift shelters have transformed into brick structures with water and sanitation networks. There are formal schools as well as health clinics. Dr. Laila brought her extensive, hands-on field experience to her two ministerial positions in attempts to influence public policy and her legacy continues to influence other development practitioners to date. الدكتورة ليلى اسكندر، وزيرة الدولة السابقة لشئون البيئة ووزيرة الدولة السابقة للتطوير الحضري والمناطق العشوائية في مصر تعد عضوًا بارزًا في المجتمع المدني حيث تعمل مع النساء والأطفال في المناطق الحضرية و الريفية المحرومة. شاركت بشكل متواصل في تحسين حياة جامعي النفايات غير الرسميين (الزبالين) في القاهرة منذ عام 1983. يقوم أعضاء المجتمع بجمع النفايات بشكل يومي وكانت العربات و الأطفال محور هام في هذه العملية. و يتم فرز النفايات يدويًا من قبل نساء وأطفال المجتمع. عندما بدأت الدكتورة ليلى في دعم المجتمع، كانت غالبية المنازل عبارة عن أكواخ وكان أقرب مصدر للمياه على بعد 5 كيلومترات ولم يكن هناك نظام صرف صحي. كانت تدخلات الدكتورة ليلى الأولى في التعليم حيث أنشأت مدرسة غير رسمية مكونة من فصلين و التي كان مدرسيها من أبناء المجتمع ذاته. في عام 1987 ساعدت في إنشاء مدرسة إعادة التدوير للفتيات. تعد جمعية حماية البيئة اليوم مؤسسة اجتماعية تديرها 12 امرأة ويدعمها متطوعون ذوو مهارات عالية. تم تدريب أكثر من 1500 فتاة وامرأة على مر السنين وهناك حاليًا 300 عضوة منتجة تتلقى دخلًا منتظمًا من المبيعات التي يتم ترويجها داخل مصر وخارجها. لقد تحولت الهياكل المؤقتة إلى منازل من الطوب مع شبكات المياه والصرف الصحي. تحتوي المنطقة على مدارس رسمية بالإضافة إلى العيادات الصحية. جلبت الدكتورة ليلى خبرتها الميدانية والعملية الواسعة إلى منصبيها الوزاريين في محاولات للتأثير على السياسة العامة ولا يزال إرثها يؤثر على ممارسي التنمية الآخرين حتى الآن.
