It was through the Global Survey of Optometry, a study conducted between 2022 and 2023, that some interesting conclusions were reached regarding the regulation of the optometry profession in 39 member countries of the World Council Of Optometry.
👉 One of the elements of the survey was to investigate whether the professional title "optometrist" is protected, revealing that there is a lack of protections surrounding this title.
The use of the professional title "optometrist" is not protected in 33% (13/39) of countries: France, Portugal, India, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Cameroon, Kenya, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Iran, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, and Guyana.
📚 The survey also concluded that tertiary education at a bachelor’s degree level or higher is not required to practice optometry in 33% (13/39) of countries: France, Portugal, Austria, Singapore, Argentina, India (diploma), Sri Lanka, Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, Iraq, Jordan, and Palestine.
