Chief Economist and Director of the Research Center at Computer & Communications Industry Association
In an era of digital connectivity, the devices we choose as our gateways to the world significantly impact our interactions. A recent survey by Omdia, commissioned by the Computer & Communications Industry Association Research Center, sheds light on digital technology use trends. While smartphones are widely used, desktops and browsers remain strong, particularly in AI-driven enterprise applications, where they will likely fuel future GDP growth through enhanced productivity. Surprisingly, young individuals favor desktops for AI interactions. Conducted with 1,000 consumers and 1,000 enterprise users, the surveys reveal intriguing insights. Notably, a majority of enterprise respondents prefer desktops for AI applications and customer support, despite 78% having access to both desktops and smartphones for work. Flexibility in device, browser, and application choices proves crucial for driving future advancements and user adoption. Key findings from the survey include a high rate of browser switching, and users predicting that AI will boost their desktop usage going forward, especially among enterprise users. The prioritization of user-friendly AI applications emerges as a shared goal for both consumer and enterprise segments. Moreover, a preference for desktops and browsers over smartphones for accessing AI tools underscores the potential economic impact of AI productivity gains by 2030, predominantly driven by desktop technologies. The following quote may be attributed to Trevor Wagener, CCIA’s Chief Economist and Director of the CCIA Research Center: “The survey shows a preference for using desktop computers and browsers over smartphones to access AI tools amongst enterprise users, implying that most of the estimated $6.6 trillion economic impact of AI productivity gains by 2030 will be driven by desktops and browsers.” Learn more:
