DevOps – Everything You Didn’t Know You Didn't Know Technology is moving at the speed of light. However, for most of us, it all comes down to expecting to binge watch our favorite show without streaming issues. Or taking comfort knowing that our online purchase of gourmet popcorn – the kind we love to munch while watching Netflix – will be delivered as promised. And when our cravings shift from popcorn to Thai, we know our Grubhub order will soon appear as if by magic. It sounds simple enough, but it takes a lot of moving pieces to make that great couch-potato evening a reality. Traditionally, development and implementation of the pieces of technology that make our lives better are performed by people working in silos. Simply put, the right hand didn’t’ always know what the left hand was doing. Consequently, things often moved slowly, and problems were more likely to occur (such as streaming issues or orders accepted when there is no available inventory). That’s where DevOps (or development and operations) comes in. In layman terms, DevOps is the marriage of development and operation. Its purpose is to get individuals out of their silos, promoting effective communication and collaboration between all the moving parts of the software lifecycle. When this occurs, there is more innovation, agility and quality at each step of the process. The improvements in performance and profitability that DevOps facilitates is fueling the growth in the technology’s market size. In 2020, it was valued at an estimated $6.78 billion and is projected to climb to $57.90 billion by 2030 according to Allied Market Research. And more demand for DevOp solutions equals happy investors. What’s particularly compelling to investors is that, while the current state of DevOps is impressive, it’s just the tip of the iceberg. There are exciting new trends and advancements on the horizon, which will continue to improve customer experiences while increasing security.
