This week our #DifferenceMakers joined with the Washington Nationals and their Outfielder Jacob Young at the Giving Garden for one of our best harvests yet! Volunteers collected with THEARC-Building Bridges Across the River for the communities of Wards 7 and 8, where residents live in a food desert—an area with little to no access to supermarkets or quality grocery stores. In 2023, we collected 1,000 pounds of produce for these communities. We can’t wait to tally how much we’ve collected in 2024. Thank you to the volunteers who’ve joined us at the Giving Garden throughout the season. #CareFirstCares

We’re excited to announce our new Head of Public Health, Dr. Bryan O. Buckley! Dr. Buckley will lead our health equity initiatives, including developing a data infrastructure to better understand disparities in health outcomes in the communities we serve. Before joining our team of #DifferenceMakers, Dr. Buckley held leadership roles focused on health equity, patient safety and advancing positive health outcomes with various healthcare organizations. We’re looking forward to what Dr. Buckley will accomplish in this role as he works toward enhancing our ability to strategically collaborate with partners and advance affordable, accessible and equitable care for all. With the growing trend in hybrid work environments, and back-to-school and flu season approaching, it's important to be up-to-date on your vaccinations. Staying on top of vaccinations keeps you, your family and your community healthy. Work with your provider and check the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website for the latest information on flu vaccinations. Proper nutrition is an important aspect of the body's whole health but for many, food insecurity prevents them from accessing enough healthy, nutritious food. CareFirst’s partnerships with local nonprofits and regional sports and entertainment leaders amplify the importance of food access and helps improve health outcomes in our communities. These programs meet people where they are and provide families with nutritional meals, produce and nutritional education. We are so proud of all we have accomplished in 2023 and 2024 already, and there is still more to come! #CareFirstCares

As a leading not-for-profit healthcare organization, we know mental and behavioral health care require an innovative approach to meet our community where, when and how they need it. That’s why we continue to partner with other local organizations, to not only utilize our collective resources but also empower frontline professionals working with the community every day. We’re proud to announce the recipient of our recent Huddle Up for Health $50,000 grant, ROBERTAS HOUSE INC. In partnership with the Baltimore Ravens, the Huddle Up for Health grant will support Roberta’s House behavioral health initiatives, including bolstering existing programs and expanding services for clientele. As a culturally inclusive behavioral health provider with a unique approach to grief counseling, Roberta’s House is closely aligned to the Huddle Up for Health program’s vision for supporting local organizations addressing public health issues to advance health equity for all. We’re proud to share that CareFirst has been named one of Modern Healthcare’s 2024 Diversity Leaders. This award recognizes our commitment to advancing diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) across our organization and the healthcare industry. Our commitment to DEI starts with our community and making sure we have diverse perspectives present for decision-making. With 33% of our executive leadership and the majority of our Board of Directors identifying as people of color, we’re making great strides, but we know there’s still so much to do in this space. We recently had the pleasure of hosting the Baltimore Business Journal for their INNO Fire Awards at our Baltimore headquarters. This annual award program recognizes companies and organizations that are leading innovators across the state in three categories: Medtech, Ecosystem Builders and Automotive. As one of the nation’s largest not-for-profit healthcare organizations, we recognize that healthcare innovation is vital to improve health outcomes and advance equity for communities across the region and country. Through our work with Healthworx, we’re at the forefront of innovation in healthcare, partnering with organizations to drive new insights, foster an entrepreneurial culture and improve access to affordable and equitable care. Our region has fostered some of the best and brightest minds and new businesses, two of which we heard from at the event. Local entrepreneurs Dawn Myers, founder of Richualist, and Marvin Montague Jr., CEO and co-founder of Meat The Mushroom were fantastic examples of how our community is shepherding innovation. Special congratulations to Astek Diagnostics and Vehicles for Change, who were named “Blazer Winners” for putting in the work and making the most significant impact on the innovation ecosystem in 2023–2024. We can’t wait to see what the INNO Fire honorees accomplish in the coming years! #CareFirstCares Photo Credit: The Baltimore Business Journal
