Thank you to the QC Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. for their donation of $10,000 which was raised at their recent masquerade ball. This donation will support our December Holiday Stroll event to purchase gifts and supplies for the families served in our Maternal-Child Health programs, and will help fund our 2025 Black Maternal Health Conference on 4/17/25. Presenting the check were: Kimberly Sullivan (2nd pic, far right), who is the chapter’s FCCS Foundation Chair-Community Service, and Brigette McGowens, Immediate Past Fundraising Chair. Thanks also to Jack & Jill members: Aimy Steele, Ph.D, President of the QC Chapter; Rashonda Burkett, new Foundation Chair- Fundraising and Nichole Majors. Also pictured were our nurses and community health workers from our MCH programs and some of our administrative and development staff.

Based in Charlotte, NC, Care Ring leads a collaborative effort to meet our community's changing health care needs and to fight racial and economic disparities in health outcomes. We are a non-profit organization that helps people who fall through the cracks of the health care system in Mecklenburg County. Since 1955, we have been providing uninsured individuals struggling with poverty with access to medical and dental care. One in 10 people die from limited access to health services. Care Ring's goal is to prevent these needless tragedies and build a stronger, healthier community. Our 5 service lines fall under 2 pillars - Access to Care and Maternal-Child Health. Access to Care includes our Low-Cost Clinic; our Physicians Reach Out network of volunteer providers; and The Bridge, our mobile unit. Maternal-Child Health includes our Nurse-Family Partnership and A Guided Journey programs which serve at-risk pregnant and new mothers, providing a range of supportive care and resource connections from pregnancy until the child's second birthday, striving to improve birth and post-natal outcomes and reduce racial and socioeconomic disparities. Care Ring also has social workers and nurse case managers on staff to assist all our clients with accessing wraparound services like counseling, food, housing, medical equipment, medications, and more to remove barriers to living their best, healthiest life. Last year we served 7,800 individuals and their families.

Happy Community Health Worker Week! Thank you to LISC Charlotte and Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) for highlighting our CHW Emilia Arispe and the important work and impact that she and all of our Community Health Workers have on the Charlotte Metro community! Thanks to partnerships and support like this, they are able to be more effective in their work.
It’s National Community Health Worker (CHW) Awareness Week! And to celebrate, we’d like you to meet Emilia Arispe, a CHW at Care Ring, a LISC partner in Charlotte. Arispe’s work is focused on helping new and expectant parents get prenatal and postpartum care and access to critical services like food assistance, transportation, child care, and housing. Before becoming a CHW, Arispe worked as a Registered Medical Assistant in a Care Ring clinic that provides primary care services at affordable rates. She transitioned to a CHW role last year in order to nurture closer relationships with the people Care Ring serves, including Spanish-speaking patients who could benefit from her bilingualism and cultural competency. As a CHW, Arispe connects clients to resources in the community. LISC’s Health Access Fund – supported by Uber – is one of those resources, providing free access to non-emergency medical transportation. To date, Care Ring has arranged free rides for 575 patients facing transportation challenges. Take Teresa, who came to the U.S. from Honduras five years ago. She was diagnosed with cervical and pelvic cancer during a postpartum visit. Arispe provided emotional support and educational information to help calm Teresa’s fears and uncertainty. She also scheduled free rides for Teresa to all chemotherapy and radiation appointments, as well as checkups for her baby. Teresa recently received her last treatment and has learned that her prognosis is excellent. And happily, her baby is healthy and thriving, too. “I love helping mothers in the community,” says Arispe. “The support from LISC has been a blessing for those we serve.”

The Bridge keeps it movin’, going where we are most needed and most visible. Thank you to local property managers Vision Ventures for having us at our new Thursday location across from Camp North End, in a corridor of high need. Thanks also to our buddies Novant Health for use of their mobile units. ABOUT: The Bridge offers FREE healthcare screenings, mental health screenings, and connection to a variety of resources to help our neighbors establish and maintain good health. We also serve Grier Heights on Tuesdays, and are at the Food Lion at Sunset & Beatties Ford on Wednesdays.

Thank you to Next Stage for hosting a celebratory lunch today for some of our crew who serve on The Bridge, our mobile healthcare unit which provides free healthcare screenings and resource connections for some of Charlotte’s most under resourced areas. Next Stage’s Helen Hope Kimbrough stated: “Ensuring equitable access to affordable care while addressing social drivers of health is an ongoing priority for Care Ring and The Bridge respectively. Today, we celebrated the interdisciplinary team and their efforts in initiating and optimizing the mobile unit to extend health care services to residents and individuals experiencing homelessness in Grier Heights, Wilkinson Boulevard, and North End. We were honored to be chosen to host a press conference for Governor Roy Cooper and NC Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kody Kinsley about their new Medical Debt Relief program! What a Wednesday we had this week! Besides hosting Governor Roy Cooper's press conference, we also had our friends SECU Foundation with us to present their extremely generous gift of $350,000 for our new building and program support. Executives from the SECU Foundation as well as local SECU employees joined us for the celebration. Thank you to McKinley Wooten for his remarks on behalf of the Foundation's Board, and to our own Board member Andrea Wages.
