💡 Spotlight on Capacity Building: Connectivity of Asian Voluntary Carbon Markets Capacity building is a cornerstone of effective environmental governance, especially in the rapidly evolving landscape of Voluntary Carbon Markets (VCMs) in Asia. During the "Connectivity of Asian Voluntary Carbon Markets" seminar, co-hosted by CASI and held in Hong Kong in August 2024, the discussion focused on the need for targeted capacity building on carbon market development, among other topics. The seminar's key conclusions, now published, include recommendations for enhancing policy coordination and boosting capacity-building efforts.📄 Full keynote summary here: https://lnkd.in/gbS5yTdf 🔎 Key areas of focus for capacity-building on VCMs emerged from the discussion, including: - Training Programs for regulators and participants on high-quality carbon credits and international best practices. - Joint Research to explore Asia's contributions to the Paris Agreement. - Engagement with ICVCM and IETA to leverage their resources and expertise. - Partnerships with NGOs and regional organizations to improve VCM designs. - Resource Utilization to better integrate ICVCM and IETA's materials into the Asian context. CASI will continue to work with partner institutions to develop and deliver training programs on carbon markets and organize policy dialogues on relevant topics. 📰 China Releases ISSB-Aligned Sustainability Disclosure Standards On December 17, 2024, China’s Ministry of Finance, alongside other ministries, issued the “Corporate Sustainability Disclosure Standards – Basic Standards” (Cai Kuai [2024] No. 17) for trial implementation. Dr. Ma Jun, Chairman of the Green Finance Committee of the China Society for Finance and Banking, President of the Institute of Finance and Sustainability (IFS), Chairman of CASI, and a member of the MOF expert group on sustainability disclosure standards welcomed the issuance of these disclosure rules. He highlighted the importance of these standards in establishing China’s sustainability disclosure framework, promoting corporate transparency, supporting global competitiveness, mobilizing sustainable finance, and advancing China’s carbon neutrality goals. Based on IFRS S1, the standards adopt a “double materiality” approach—addressing both the impact of climate on businesses and the impact of businesses on the environment, economy, and society. The next steps include developing an implementation roadmap and enhancing capacity-building efforts. The Capacity-building Alliance of Sustainable Investment (CASI), launched during COP28, stands ready to support these efforts, having already trained 5,000 participants in 2024.
