Congratulations to Lucy Stancliff, Candlelighters Scholarship winner. Lucy is a bilateral retinoblastoma survivor who is pursuing studies in human biology or public health at Utah State University. Lucy's cancer diagnosis came at a very early age, "At seventeen months, I was diagnosed with bilateral retinoblastoma. My doctors discovered 12 small tumors in my right eye and, more concerningly, one large tumor that almost completely filled my left eye, and was making its way to my brain." She doesn't recall her first interaction with Candlelighters. But her parents do: " I don’t remember this, but my parents have often talked about their introduction to Candlelighters with the warm meal of Italian food that was served in the toy room at the hospital on one of the first nights we were there. Since then, my family and I have been actively involved in our local Chapter of Central Oregon, and some of my and my siblings’ best memories are of Candlelighter family activities." Candlelighters would like to thank the Hougard and Tilden families for providing the critical funding to support Candlelighters’ 2024-2025 scholarship initiative, in memory of Owen Stolte. Thank you to Melissa Rose, Candlelighters Board President and Candlelighters family. Melissa stepped in as interim Executive Director during the last 7 months, helping the staff and organization out immensely. It could not have been easy, as she also juggled her regular full time job and numerous other professional board memberships. But in true Melissa fashion, she did it all without complaining, and with a smile and generous spirit. Thank you for your commitment to Candlelighters, Melissa. Congratulations to scholarship recipient, Alan! Alan was diagnosed at the end of high school with Leukemia, and he's still in treatment, which brings a lot of challenges to his studies. Though he's quick to point out the perspective it's given him, one that we can all aspire to, "This experience that I went and am currently going through warped the course of my life. And as much as I wish this period of my life never happened it has also shaped a fundamental aspect of who I am today. It has taught me a lot to appreciate the little moments, the calmness, the storms, and most importantly the people around us. Understanding and knowing that this can happen at any moment taught me to live life to the fullest." The Candlelighters staff got a big surprise today! We came excited and a little nervous for a 10:30am meeting with the Sundt Foundation, knowing we were on the short list of local non profits to receive a 25K donation celebrating the foundation's 25th year. About 10 minutes into our meeting, more Sundt Construction employees burst into the office with a big surprise - balloons, cupcakes and a big check to announce we had already been selected! Sundt Foundation is funded by their local employees, whose gifts are matched by the company. As a local nonprofit, it is truly special to be on the receiving end of a generous employer and employees who care about their community. Thank you, Sundt Foundation and employees!
