Public trust in higher ed has been declining for years, but do we know why? Or how individuals really think and feel about the value of higher education? Findings from our inaugural social intelligence report prove the existence of a public perception gap—45% of the conversation included cautionary advice for prospective students. Considerations included: - The need for motivation to take advantage of opportunities - Pursuing majors with a strong ROI - Only studying disciplines “of value” if using student loans “Understanding the gap—the difference between what is true about the value of a college degree and what the public believes to be true for themselves and others—is vital to design a strategy that changes behavior along with hearts and minds,” said Liz Gross, Ph.D., Campus Sonar Founder and CEO. Utah Valley University is using social intelligence to support its University Marketing and Advancement teams. - Social intelligence insights help the marketing team see where they're making an impact with their brand pillars and messaging, find opportunities to extend their impact, and grow positive sentiment around their brand and mission. https://lnkd.in/gZVvD3ej - The advancement team uses social intelligence to identify potential donors with a high-level giving capacity and expand their current network. By surfacing alumni stories, they're also able to shape and leverage how UVU is perceived and support the advancement of key engagements with individuals, sponsors, industry partners, and alumni. https://lnkd.in/gUjnhmRy Both teams are building their capacity and expanding their capabilities to reach campus outcomes.

Brandon Busteed highlights how improving work readiness is a key solution to restoring confidence in higher ed. Aligned with Brandon’s thoughts, our social intelligence research highlights the need for workforce development outcomes to increase confidence in higher ed. Negative perceptions of the value of higher ed focused on cost and the perception that choosing “the wrong major” could have large financial consequences. Over 40% of individuals shared cautionary advice focused on prioritizing career potential and considering your major’s ROI. Colleges that align their operations and messaging in support of outcomes will succeed at rebuilding trust and renewing confidence in the value of a degree. Download our research. https://lnkd.in/gj9ZSZ8T
The reasons behind declining confidence in U.S. higher education are myriad. At the very top of this list are political polarization and concerns about the relevance of what is taught and the work-readiness of graduates. The first has less obvious or immediate solutions. But on relevance and work-readiness there are crystal clear - and nearly instant - solutions. These are 7 steps colleges can take to restore confidence in higher ed. And on these, there is widespread support. #highered #highereducation #highereducationleadership

Two recommendations from our trust research to decrease risk on campus. 1. Lead with transparency. This can feel very risky, but the data tells us that, whenever possible, actively addressing pain points, weaknesses, and barriers alongside the value that a college or university provides is one of the ways to regain that trust. What the public needs is honesty, and that's akin to transparency. 2. The need to really listen to audiences. Ensure there are structures and frameworks to listen to all students, including historically marginalized students, and other key stakeholders. Social intelligence is one of those structures, and it aligns with the concept of humanity—one of Deloitte's four factors of trust. The research found that consumers who believe a brand is high in humanity are 2.5 times more likely to stick with that brand through a mistake. Liz Gross, Ph.D. shares more about using social intelligence to manage risk. https://lnkd.in/gNyukVn2

"Students want to believe in the outcomes of college, but they're hesitant and don't trust their ability to take the journey to get there." Liz Gross, Ph.D. Students are struggling with the college journey—that's what we're really seeing in our research is the gap between what students think they want, but also the path to get them there. Higher ed needs to do more work talking about how they pave that path to get there versus doubling down on college being worth it at the end. It's the path that the students are most concerned about.
