🚨 The California Department of Social Services Office of Child Abuse Prevention (OCAP) recently announced a second round of focus groups (January 2025 & April 2025) intended to gather feedback to ensure the redesign of the Mandated Reporter Training provides the most upstream and supportive content so mandated reporters have the necessary resources to report abuse and neglect only when necessary. By sharing your interest in a focus group, you are taking part in a transformative movement towards the shift to community supporting, ensuring a trained workforce that prioritizes supporting families if there is little question of risk to a child’s safety. OCAP would especially like to invite Law Enforcement, School Personnel, Lived Expertise, and Tribal populations to provide their valuable feedback. 🔗 The deadline to submit your focus group interest form is November 29, 2024. Children and families thrive when they have access to safe, stable, nurturing relationships and environments. By preventing adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), we can lower rates of mental health issues and suicide in teenagers.
New Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Study Highlights the Importance of Preventing Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) Among Teens A new CDC report reveals that ACEs, such as abuse, neglect, and witnessing violence, are far too common among U.S. high school students. With 3 in 4 teens experiencing at least one ACE, the link between these experiences and mental health challenges is undeniable. The good news? Prevention can make a tremendous impact. By preventing ACEs, suicide attempts among teens could decrease by up to 89%, prescription pain medication misuse by 84%, and persistent feelings of sadness by 66%. At PCA America, we are proud to contribute to this vital research, and we remain committed to building safe, stable, and nurturing environments that prevent ACEs before they start. Together, we can create healthier futures for all children, support families, and strengthen communities.
