🆕New in the library 📚 Empowering Communities: Village Saving and Loan Associations (VSLAs) and Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Prevention in Southern Haiti Haiti's economy has deteriorated since 2019 due to political instability, gang violence, socioeconomic crises, and natural disasters. With gangs reportedly controlling 90% of Port-au-Prince and surrounding areas, widespread insecurity has limited movement, harmed livelihoods, and exacerbated Gender-Based Violence (GBV), particularly affecting women in Sud Department as road blockages isolate communities. From June to December 2023, CORE (Community Organized Relief Effort) piloted an integrated Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLA) and GBV prevention initiative across five communes in Sud. The project established women’s VSLA-Protection groups, provided business and savings training, strengthened social networks, and raised GBV awareness. This brief shares insights and recommendations for scaling up integrated VSLA-GBV prevention efforts. 🆕New in the library 📚 Cash in Armed Conflict: Why cash remains the optimal solution as conflict escalates - A feasibility assessment of cash assistance in Lebanon Since September 2024, hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah have displaced over 1 million people in Lebanon. The response has prioritized in-kind aid for those in shelters, while efforts for others are still developing. A “cash-first” strategy is recommended in the Flash Appeal for areas where cash assistance is feasible. This report summarizes Mercy Corps’ October 2024 rapid assessment on the feasibility of cash assistance for displaced populations outside collective shelters. The assessment finds cash assistance both feasible and preferred by affected populations for its flexibility. Although disruptions occurred initially, markets have largely recovered, though hoarding has driven price increases for items like cereals and pulses. In areas hit by airstrikes, cash redemption is delayed, but demand for cash remains high. The main barrier to scaling the cash response is the lack of a secure identification and registration platform.
