Yesterday's Photo Hour at Butterfly Pavilion was the most well attended session we've had, yet. Fantastic questions, including some very good discussions about light sculpting. The usual lighting suspects came up: on camera flashes, ring lights, LED versions of one or the other... And how the most dramatic lighting often forces our source to be off camera. In this case, way off camera 😂 out in front of the lens, above and to the left of the subject, spotting downwards. Fortunately, the Tamron Americas #A069 50-300 VC VXD Macro has outstanding stabilization AND dual linear voice coil auto focus tech, so it was made for this sort of thing. We had an ambitious list of wanted traits: translucence in the wings, a well lit thorax, a proper catch light in the eye AND we wanted the proboscis/bloom combo to remain within the direct light circle, knowing the scatter was going to fall off rapidly. This was all a huge gamble because both the camera and the flashlight used were handheld; which means upping the intensity of the light to allow for a manageable shutter speed/ISO balance without also blowing out a butterfly known for its dominant white accents. Sony's Expanded Spot AF was set for continuous at a sensitivity level of 5 to keep the eye on target. Metadata: 69mm, f/7.1, 1/125, ISO 200. A 16mm extension tube was also in play for even greater native magnification... The flashlight used was my new light painting partner: the ACEBEAM T35 Neutral White LED. Post production was a tight rope of color channels, controlling highlights and shadows but, with only one exception, all corrections were global: this is a single shot, full frame, uncropped image. A Paper Kite Butterfly at the bar. The mood works! Make sure you have a pocketable, off-camersa light source when you go shoot macro. And make sure your lens is our 50-300 VC VXD. It can do wonders 😎 #butterflypavilion #withmytamron #tamronlenses #butterfliesofinstagram #macrophotography #acebeam #acebeamt35 #lensparty #colorado #coloradogram #coloradotography #igersdenver #denvergram #denvertography

I am a big fan of isolation in images. The story is simple, sure, but commonly compelling because of that simplicity. A lot of my landscape work achieves this through compression and the separation of fields. Macro, however, while certainly field heavy in its presentation, often benefits from color isolation. A simplified palette, smaller pieces clearly made more important through clarity and contrast, and an engaging image can likely be crafted. These four are good examples of that philosophy. All captured on the Tamron Americas #A065 70-180 f/2.8 VC VXD G2, our professional workhorse in a tiny package that just so happens to do some very nice proto-macro work at 70mm. Two of these images used supplemental lighting: the Small Block WR LED cube from ProMaster. An absolutely priceless tool when working up close and small. Two of the images were available light only. All were handheld at f/4. Good stabilization is priceless. Thanks to Butterfly Pavilion, Westminster, CO as usual, for being such kind hosts. I know: no butterflies, here! But their botany is also so good, it deserves its own post. Thanks, also, to Mike's Camera for inviting Tamron Lenses to come play at their macro classes. Working with your students is a blast... And the challenge to capture our own good images is always accepted 😁 #butterflypavilion #floral #flowertography #flowahs #flores #mymikescamera #withmytamron #tamronlenses #colorisking #macrophotography #70mm #bokehlicious #upclose
