How can small and medium enterprises (SMEs) play a pivotal role in protecting #Nature? 🌱 There are an estimated 350-400 million SMEs across the world, accounting for around two-thirds of all jobs. With massive combined spending power and crucial roles in supply chains, SMEs have huge potential to impact nature. The benefits of taking the first steps toward creating a nature strategy can far outweigh any costs, even for the smallest SME. In the latest ‘It’s #NowForNature’ article, we spoke to Eva Zabey, Benjamin Matthews, Keith Mellen, Josie Morris MBE DL and Adele Cheli, on how SMEs can take the first steps towards a #NatureStrategy, namely through: 🌎 Taking a targeted approach, looking at a particular product that they produce or sell that has the highest impact on nature. 🌎 Leveraging tools like ENCORE (Exploring Natural Capital Opportunities, Risks and Exposure); a free, online platform that sets out the importance of nature to the economy, sector-by-sector. 🌎 Assigning simple governance within the business and giving responsibility to whoever on the executive team is most interested in the issue, meaning they can lead on building a team of passionate staff who can inspire and motivate others. Businesses can also find out more about how to develop and submit their nature strategy by using the Nature Strategy Handbook, a step-by-step guide on how to develop a nature strategy. How can the built environment sector play a role in the transition to a #NaturePositive economy? 🌱 Buildings, and urban, transport and coastal infrastructure form the built environment sector, which is responsible for 40% of global CO2 emissions, 40% of global resource use and 40% of global waste streams. With the global population expected to reach 9.8 billion in 2050, the sector is set to double in size, putting increased pressure on #Nature. This emphasizes that the sector should take priority actions to help contribute to a nature-positive future, namely: 🌎 Avoid further terrestrial, freshwater and marine habitat conversion. 🌎 Prioritize re-use and retrofitting over demolition. 🌎 Select materials with nature in mind and invest in circularity. 🌎 Apply Nature-based Solutions (NbS). To support this transition, the WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development in collaboration with Business for Nature and the World Economic Forum has produced sector-specific guidance to ensure that the built environment sector plays its role in halting and reversing #NatureLoss by 2030. 🔗 Read more: https://bit.ly/3M6h9G9

The #NatureRestoration Law has come into force! 🔊🌱 The economic cost of the degradation of #Nature is very high, with every euro spent on restoration delivering a return on investment of more than €8, depending on the ecosystem. In a recent press release, EU Environment and Climate explores how the Nature Restoration Law plans to meet EU-wide objectives for #Nature restoration, namely through: 🌎 National restoration plans, where each Member State will develop a national restoration plan, setting out restoration needs and measures to fulfill the obligations and achieve the targets of the law adapted to the national context. 🌎 Quantified and time-bound restoration targets for habitats included in Annex I of the Habitats Directive, as well as targets for habitats of protected species under the Habitats and the Birds Directives, and restoration targets for essential marine habitats covered by the nature directives and the Marine Strategy Framework Directive. Full implementation of the law is crucial to restoring the EU’s #Biodiversity and stopping further #BiodiversityLoss. 🔗 Read more: https://lnkd.in/e4eQH3_X

How can governments, the private sector, and conservation groups in Africa help promote #Conservation? 🌱 At the recent African Regional Conservation Forum 2024, Africa demonstrated dedication to its Sustainable Agenda 2063. However, to achieve this, Africa must integrate conservation with long-term development, ensuring natural heritage and economic goals thrive together. In a recent article for IUCN, Humphrey Kariuki calls for collaboration in African conservation, suggesting the following approaches: 🌎 Demonstrating the value of conservation efforts to communities living near protected areas. 🌎 Recognizing the true value of Africa's #Biodiversity, essential for allocating resources for future generations. 🌎 Reconsidering its approach to conservation, embracing innovation, and asserting its role in global conservation governance. "The time has come for a stronger commitment to protect Africa's natural heritage. Safeguarding wildlife and landscapes is crucial not only for the future of our planet but also for the well-being of all its inhabitants, human and non-human." - Humphrey Kariuki, Founder of Janus Continental Group (JCG) 🔗 Read more: https://lnkd.in/d3BHGyTv
